Ole Miss depth (or lack thereof)

Ole Miss has gotten a lot of love this year from just about everywhere. How they have such a big NIL treasure chest is beyond me, Mississippi is such a comparatively poor state. But there is no doubt they brought in a load of quality starters with their NIL money.
Over the past 30 years or so, LSU has almost every year enjoyed having a talent advantage over Ole MIss. For the first time I can remember in a while, the starting players for Ole Miss are on a talent par with LSU, even better at some positions.
What Ole Miss has not done as well as LSU is to recruit players out of high school. In any given recruiting season, LSU might have twice as many blue chips. Thats where the depth advantage can come in.
Ole Miss had a few injuries on the offensive line going into the Kentucky game, and thats where their lack of depth was obvious. The SEC is far and away the most physical conference in the league. Alabama, Georgia and LSU have owed a lot of their respective success to having blue chips backing up blue chips at multiple positions.
It’s a good time to catch Ole Miss for LSU. Ole Miss will be coming off a road trip to South Carolina, LSU will be coming off a bye week. South Carolina might not be a top tier SEC team, but they are a physical team and it will be worth watching if Ole Miss has even more players beat up.
In particular, keep an eye on their o-line and who is able to play. I think they are three starters down there. I would not underestimate Ole Miss at all based on one loss. They have a lot of NFL talent on their team. I’m just not so sure they have the 4 star blue chip back-ups that other top teams have.
It’s proven that you can buy transfer portal players that can plug in and make a difference. You still have to recruit. And to survive in the SEC you have to depth or be very lucky with injuries.
The “must win game” thing is very overused. But LSU/Ole Miss game this year sure does have a must win feel to it for both teams to stay in the playoff race. It’s hard to see either team running the table the rest of the year. With all the expectations Ole Miss had at the start of the season and one of the easier schedules, an Ole Miss loss at LSU would be devastating. They may have their hands full with South Carolina.

And we are…. what?
This sounds like the Arkansas fans that don’t understand why LSU has so much NIL money compared to them. The states finances are irrelevant to NIL.

If anyone can scheme and coach around a bad oline it’s Lane. Spread the ball side to side, vertical play action shots and quick game is key. They just won’t run it down hill.
But same you say for their oline so the same for our dline. They are thinking we haven’t recruited well there and have no depth.

MS isn’t just poor overall. This state (I live in North MS) has a much smaller overall population. Then you take that population and split it between two SEC programs instead of one and there just isn’t that much to go around. This makes a huge difference.
Since you mentioned them, Arkansas has a better potential situation than OM with a similar dominant hold on their state and a few very strong businesses and donors in the state. The right coach and structure could do something more with that. However, one thing that does hold them back is that Arkansas isn’t nearly as strong of a HS recruiting area as either LA or Mississippi.

They don’t. They are an “every 10 or 15 years or so” spender. Generally it’s when they believe they have a good QB they will spend a lot of money for one or two years then back to nothing. They can’t afford to compete yearly.

All irrelevant. They have alumni with money that want to spend on NIL. They do not have any financial issues.

They do not have near as much NIL commitment to football as other SEC programs. Again, this isn’t a local economy or business atmosphere issue. It’s all about if alumni are willing to give money to teenage football players.

Really? I saw something different vs Kentucky.
Lane will always Lane. It’s not an opinion it’s a fact.
Before the season I said Ole Miss would come into Tiger Stadium and give LSU all it could handle. Today I believe we can win the game. It’s going to take an all around effort, but I think Ole Miss gets beat up some more this weekend and limps into Baton Rouge.
Will LSU take advantage, we’ll see.
