I don't really like this, BUT it is a situation that actually benefits everybody.
Let's just take the case of Pyburn just as an example. He ends up as a bubble spot. He's not on the main roster, but he'd have to clear waivers and even if he makes the practice squad, he might play the cut/release game all season as rosters change weekly in the NFL. The Bucs can go to him and say, "hey, we don't really have a roster spot for you this season." The ideal situation instead of potentially losing him to another team is to have him retire, go play at LSU and he can un-retire and come back the next off season and Tampa would still have his rights. They don't have to draft him, they don't have to sign him as a UDFA, they don't even have to scout him. Just tell him when and where to show up. Pyburn, if he is on the roster bubble, we'll he gets to go back to LSU, make some money, and play and possibly get better. He doesn't have to worry about draft stock, he already has an NFL team to go to when the season is over. LSU gets an experienced DE.
There are potential downfalls in every case, but they are very small compared to the upside.
I still don't like it, but it is what college sports is now, and i'm honestly for as much anarchy as possible to force change anyway.
