This is such a huge recruiting coup, I feel it deserves it's own thread.

Coach Mulkey has been tearing it up on the recruiting trail with her incoming freshmen class as well as transfers via the transfer portal. The biggest being 6'3" Angel Reese, who is a third team all american (as a sophomore) and is a double double machine having averaged 18 ppg and 11 rpg for Maryland this past season. Here's the announcement...........

Angel is a Tiger!

Highlights for reference.....

20 pts vs eventual national champ South Carolina!

22 pts vs Ohio State (the team that knocked LSU out of the NCAA this past March)

25 pts vs final four team Stanford

This next season, LSU may actually be a better team than the one that just finished in 2nd place in the SEC!

I saw the ESPN article earlier. Next year's team should take a huge step forward. But I was puzzled by the last sentence in the article.
quote:

The Tigers, who fell to Ohio State in the second round of the NCAA tournament earlier this year, are trying to reload following the departure of the majority of their major contributors from last season, including WNBA draft picks Khayla Pointer and Faustine Aifuwa, who were selected No. 13 and No. 35, respectively, by the Las Vegas Aces before being waived.

I don't follow the WNBA much, so I'm not sure what this is referring to. Were Pointer and Aifuwa waived right after they were drafted? If so, why? Can someone enlighten me? Thanks...

Yeah they were waived. Aifuwa I didn’t think would make it but I thought Pointer would make it. Sucks

Yes, they were waived. But it wasn't because they weren't good. IT's because there just aren't many roster spots in the WNBA. So, every year you end up with players drafted, even in the top 15, that get waived. Here's a story explaining the situation...............

Salary Cap is Killng Opportunities.......

From what I read, Pointer was good in college but she was not big enough to compete in WNBA AND Alfuwa just wasn't polished enough....there were better players ahead of her. I loved watching them at LSU.

That's why it's been on page 1 of The Rant for like a whole day.

Great! Glad they decided to do so AFTER I'd posted this one.

Sorry for the belated response, but thanks for linking to this article, which does indeed explain what's going on. Sounds like the WNBA is the victim of the "unintended consequences" phenomenon. In an effort to increase pay for the top stars, they've made it difficult to maintain a competitive roster. I would bet that this hard cap is going to be revised pretty quickly.

Pointer is more than big enough to compete in the WNBA. Destini Henderson, who is smaller than Pointer and was drafted 13 spots after her, is playing in Indiana. Unfortunately, Pointer got drafted to a very good team that just couldn't make room for her, whereas Henderson got drafted to a horrible team that has decided to play four rookies.
