I knew we didn't spend a lot on OOS recruiting, but this was a big surprise. Very interesting reading.

On the subject of OOS recruiting, this also is a very interesting read...

Yeah, it's obvious that OOS recruiting isn't a priority here.

IT's not that OOS recruiting isn't a priority...

We're signing 15-18 Louisiana kids per year. Many of those kids are within 100-150 miles of BR.

How much money does it take to go see that recruit?

Not nearly what it costs to go visit the recruits 500 miles away.

LSU is the only BCS school in the #1 NFL player/capita state with Texas to the West and the #2 NFL player/capita state(MS)to the East. There really isn't a need to spend anywhere close to top-10 in recruiting. If Miles wanted to increase the recruiting budget, I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be much opposition.

Just to note, the first post does include all sports expenses, but in the SEC, the lion's share is for football.

Here is the SEC data (in alphbetical order):

Schools Men’s Sports Recruitment Expenses Average Per Team Average Per Player
Alabama $1,339,537.00 $191,362.43 $4,801.21
Arkansas $1,060,500.00 $176,750.00 $4,158.82
Auburn $1,530,917.00 $218,702.43 $5,798.93
Florida $1,065,716.00 $152,245.14 $3,765.78
Georgia $1,039,220.00 $148,460.00 $3,806.67
Kentucky $865,254.00 $108,156.75 $2,800.17
LSU $574,182.00 $82,026.00 $1,858.19
Mississippi State $477,868.00 $79,644.67 $1,982.85
Ole Miss $694,038.00 $115,673.00 $2,953.35
South Carolina $497,213.00 $62,151.63 $1,897.76
Tennessee $1,878,771.00 $268,395.86 $7,089.70
Vanderbilt $792,574.00 $132,095.67 $4,238.36

Looking at this, there is no doubt we get the most bang for the buck as per national titles, bowl wins and overall victories.

What is also shows is there is an arms race when it comes to recruiting. How much is reasonable?

I really don't see this as a problem just as long as we're hitting Mississippi and Texas up enough with Louisiana...

I would like to get a WR coach with some strong Florida ties and increase this spending on more Florida trips.

I know we are in a good geographic location as respects talent pools (TX, LA), but it's not like Texas/Florida/Georgia/Bama/Auburn are cross country from them. As much money as the program makes it would seem they could spend a bit more and maybe hire a couple more recruiters. Considering our success, it's nitpicky, but would still be nice.

makes you wonder why tennessee and auburn spend so much money on football recruiting...

quite a bit of a respective SEC team consists of instate athletes and would expect southern cal, notre dame and oregon to be among the biggest spenders

How about taking the cash from Billy G and the low recruiting budget and hiring somebody that can recruit like the best and actually knows about a passing offense ...........

I think that's OK, as long as 1 and 2 don't go somewhere else. 2013 (at least per 247) shapes up to be a weak LA class, with best prospect in the 70's nationally, and the second best at around 105 - and according to the board, Bama may be the leader for him.

Georgia is similar to Louisiana. Lots of native talent, and the Bulldogs get many of them. But Bama, LSU, Clemson and Florida hit the Peach State hard (esp Bama), therefore they have to be proactive. It may mean spending a lot more in SC or in AL or FLA, not necessarily up North or out West.

Our MO in the past has been to get almost all the LA top 10, then get a 5 star from FL and/or TX to fill out the class. That MO took a hit the last two years in LA with Reed/Robinson, and this year LC/DD.

I just think the mindset of LA prospects (and those nationally) is changing. Playing for the home team for whatever reason is just not important to them anymore, so if you lose them, you have to replace them with out of state of out of region players of equal caliber. This has happened to GA, Bama, and others and they seem to have responded to make the necessary recruiting investments to get their OOS players.

I don't think spending for the sake of spending is ideal, but when Iowa State outspends LSU, we probably should be a bit more aggressive.

I saw an interesting quote the other day in regards to Kodak going bankrupt "You don't reinvent yourself when your sales are sliding, you do it when you're at the top". I kind of feel we (meaning fans) take the LA depth of talent a bit for granted, that it will always be there for us.

I am still truly amazed we have done so well with our recruiting investment. That's a tribute to the coaches.

Tennessee puts out maybe five to seven SEC caliber kids a year (and half of those come from Memphis where they are struggling lately), so UT has to go elsewhere to find players. For this reason, they are traditionally the best in the SEC at recruiting the West Coast and the JUCO ranks.

Auburn loses on average probably 75% of its biggest in-state targets to Bama, so they have to look elsewhere also. They also spend a lot on Tiger Prowl and other stupid crap like that, because they have to in order to get out of Bama's shadow.
