re: If you could only have one, would you rather Collins or Kiel?

Collins
In state "can't miss" prospect. Kiel has some concerns about his competition and we've only had an outside chance on him. Keep the defense strong, play with Mett for two years and get a top notch QB next year.

Kiel, not close.
Collins looks good, but there's absolutely nothing that tells me he has a lower probability of being a bust than Kiel, and with both being relatively equal, I'll go with the more important position that may give us some more national visibility. Plus, we've got an insane group of defensive backs already. I'd rather have a major position upgrade than a minor one.

I'd have to agree with this. Year in and year out we recruit good DB's, but we can't recruit a top notch QB for anything, and I don't believe this year will be any different. I'm holding out hope, but not holding my breath.

Collins and it ain't even close, defense is more important than offense. With LSUs RBs a great QB isn't needed

Collins makes an impact on day 1. He'd immediately be our third Safety behind Reid and Loston. He'd be an immediate difference-maker, and absolutely murder people on Kick Coverage. Kiel might never see the field.
At LSU QBs really don't make that much of a difference. Our hallmark is dominant D and a punishing run game. Whoever throws it 12 times a game just better not throw picks.

Projecting a QB is probably one of the hardest evaluations out there. The mental game alone for a QB is a crap shoot at best.

Kiel, do to him having the bigger impact position.

Might have been one of the dumbest things I've read in a while.
3rd string safety =/= immediate impact.
We have plenty of talent that can play special teams.
At LSU QB's don't really make a difference, because we haven't had a top tier QB in a very very long time.
Some of you people just sound ridiculous saying that because we're LSU def is more important. Jeez. It's like saying Baltimore wouldn't kill to have Brees, Brady, or Rodgers because Defense is their trademark. How dumb does that sound?

Our Hallmark? We're selling Christmas cards now?

Not 3rd string. Third safety which means he'd play as a freshman and likely be a starter for three years if he stays his Sr year.

We've got that group because we recruit guys like Reid and Collins.

Yeah, but this is an OR thread between Collins or Kiel. Who would Baltimore have rather had four years ago? Ed Reed/Ray Lewis or Brady/Brees.
It's really just splitting hairs between two great players, but Collins is the safer bet. Who is to say Kiel won't be the next Garrett Gilbert, Anthony Morelli, Rhett Bomar, Kyle Wright, Jimmy Clausen or Mitch Mustain? (who were all 5 star QBs too)
Plus, Collins is in our back yard and you want to keep him here and not have him at bama. Kiel at Vandy or ND doesn't really impact LSU as much.

Doubt it. But sya he makes an impact for 3 years. Whos to say Keil doesnt redshirt and make an impact for 3 years?
LSU's secondary, this year is maybe the best in college football history. Claiborne, Mathieu and Reid were not on ANYBODY's "must have" list.
So clearly, Chavis and company can find and coach up stellar DBs. Collins is a great get, but Kiel would be a whole level up. (Or similar talent at QB).
To put it very simply, QB is any football teams most important position. Doesn't mean you have to have a great one, but it sure as frick helps out a lot.
Can anybody, without using Google, name the starting safeties for the past 5 BCS NCs? Or how about the NFL Champs?
ETA: Mispelled Reid. My bad.

Amazing if not sad thread. Anyone in their right mind that wouldn't take the number one QB prospect in the country over a safety is on crack!!!
And at LSU that decision is already tilted more to the taking Kiel! Simply amazing. I need to collect these names!

quote:And that's assuming a lot. Ronald Martin looked good in his playing time. David Jenkins might get safety time. He would likely get early playing, but to think he would have an immediate impact with the depth ahead of him? hmmm I'm not sold. I think his major impact could happen as a soph.

And who would you rather right now? I'll take Brady or Brees over any def player and it's not close. I'm just comparing any def player to a premier QB, obviously these guys aren't Brees/Ray Lewis, but both of these guys we're comparing could bust or they could both be studs. They are both considered top of their position at this particular level though.
Loston was a guy I was super high on out of HS. He was a top 15 HS player and 5 star. I don't think he's been as good as I hoped he would be.
I just think in this region we always seem to have DB's come to the program, but it's almost unbelievable how difficult it's been for us to land a top tier QB.

Collins, without question.
Posted on 12/14/11 at 3:57 pm to PeaRidgeWatash
The more I think of Collins as safety prospect. He is going to be great but not better than Eric Reid (which is where I put his ceiling MAX!) Gunner on the other hand has Luck/Barkely type upside. Give me the potential franchise QB all day! Look how easily we replaced ER1(albeit for one game) and Collins isnt even here yet!

Excellent example. Loston was the #1 DB coming out of high school, and he hasn't made much an impact at all.
His film looked amazing and he had all the right numbers.
Not saying that Collins will bust, but we can land a good recruit and coach him up at DB. QBs are MUCH harder to coach up. It's much better to start with a solid QB with good fundamentals.
