I know the NCAA is allowing teams to sign 25+7 from the transfer portal.

But is 7 the hard number on transfers? That would give us a chance to sign 25 high schoolers PLUS the 7 transfers, for a total of 32 first time counters, correct?

So if we only get 18-20 high school kids, can we still only sign 7 transfers?

Hoping someone more familiar with the rules will chime in and answer.

Can we sign a total of 32 between the 2 signing periods? Or is 7 the max number of transfers?

Shea talked about how LSU can sign more than 7 transfers on the Geaux 247 podcast if LSU does not sign 25 high school players.

We can sign 32 transfers. You just subtract that number from how many freshmen we sign (max of 25).

I would add a caveat: You can sign the 7 additional transfers if you qualify for the 7 transfers. If you only qualify for 3 than you only get to sign 3.

To qualify for an additional transfer, an LSU player would have to enter the transfer portal by either the end of the fall 2021 semester or December 15, 2021 which ever is earlier.

Enter the portal or actually transfer? I'm not sure why it would matter when they enter the portal as much as when they actually leave the institution.

I truthfully do not know, I am not employed by the LSU athletic department. Additionally, I have not been able to procure a copy of the one year waiver that allows the additional transfers to peruse same.

Currently, LSU has eight players in the transfer portal for the 2021-2022 year. All but three entered the portal prior to December 1, 2021. Three entered on 12/08/21, was this day after the end of the semester? How does the NCAA define end of semester, last day of classes? last final exam for a transferring athlete? last final exam date for LSU?

Since, none of the eight in the portal dropped out of school (have to be enrolled and maintain academic progress towards a degree in order to be eligible for the one time transfer without having to sit out a year) does it come down to the NCAA allowing transfer after the first term in totality or entering the portal at a certain date?

To answer your question, IMO, zero at the least and 7 at the most, with the most probable answer at least 3.

There seems to be much confusion on the wording of the NCAA one time waiver and finding same on the internet to peruse same has been a futile. It all depends on the actual wording of the waiver.

I agree with you, these kids had to stay in school in order to maintain their eligibility for next year, even if same is used at a new school.

And the actual NCAA press release announcing the one time waiver begins:

"The Division I Council this week approved a one-year waiver of the annual signing limit and initial scholarship limits in football to allow schools to replace up to seven scholarship student-athletes who leave school after the first term." Link to NCAA press release

This suggests that LSU should have 7 spots to use to me, but what is the actual wording of the waiver?

Numerous media outlets have opined on the subject and have intimated that there is "transfer portal" verbage in the waiver. So who really knows without the benefit of the actual waiver.

NCAA gonna NCAA.

I don't have much confidence in the college recruiting media to get the details right on these things.

Back in 2018, most of them were reporting that you could no longer use unused spots for early entrants the following year.

This article with misinformation is still up on the 247 website.
