It was reported that Gunner Kiels family called Les today . It was also reported that its ok for the player or family to make the call .

Then the NCAA rules must be wrong:

The coach may write and telephone you or your parents during this time.

Hey can you get us some help moving Gunner into the dorm?
Or sorry it was close but gotta go for ND diploma.
Not being privy to the phone call could go either way. We will know when we will know. Reading this thread i forgot about how great its going to be having Met next season. Just trust miles not to get screwed picking a qb that goes to play pro baseball and leaves us stuck as in previous years.

Then the NCAA manual and bylaws must be wrong, because it definitely says coaches can call.
ETA:
Relevant bylaws are....
13.02.4
13.02.5.4
13.1.3.1.2

What the frick is all this by law shite?
Btw, the players can contact the coaches, not the other way around. Common knowledge.

From Steve Wiltfong
quote:
I'm not predicting Kiel to LSU, just feel they may have some momentum. I wouldn't be surprised if he picked any of his three finalists. The thing is, Kiel has not made up his mind. Anyone that says they know where he's going is guessing or speculating. If Kiel knew where he was going, he'd be committed. Perhaps he has a leader of the three, but he isn't ready to pull the trigger. He could still very well end up at Notre Dame or Vanderbilt.

Coaches get 1 call per week. The dead in dead period is for "in person" contact such as off campus visits and unofficial or official visits. Say a kid came to LSU today for a visit, since it's a dead period the coaches couldn't talk to the kid. This why the news of Bourque visiting Monday made no sense. Contact during a dead period is usually started by the player or his family calling the coaches aside from the 1 call a week.
Dead periods are often mischaracterized as being no recruiting periods but they are based soley on contact off or on campus. The most famous dead period is the one starting on the Sunday night before signing day. This one allows the coaches to make that 1 call the day before signing day to make their final pitch and then the kid sends his fax on signing day. This dead period is infamous for one noted phone call by Lane Kiffin to Alshon Jeffrey on the night before signing day in 2009. That is the call where Kiffin "allegedly" told Alshon that if he chose South Carolina he would end up "pumping gas" for the rest of his life like the other people in South Carolina. This dead period is also the one that allowed the final phone call from Les Miles and Brick Haley that landed us Sam Montgomery and was the dead period that last year at 9:00 pm Miles and Haley talked to Tim Jernigan and had the impression that he was going to be a Tiger. The next morning on signing day is when Jernigan broke the news that he was staying home to play for FSU. Shea Dixon can attest that particular phone call took place during a dead period.
I don't know who has their rules confused and it's not really that important but the coaches can call during a dead period.

Players can contact coaches, that is correct.
There are periods of time when players can not be called, that is correct.
During dead periods coaches are allowed to call. During this one they are allowed to call once per week. During the dead period the week of signing day they are allowed unlimited calls.
These are facts according to the NCAA, not people that cover recruiting on a website who have never bothered to read the rules, and not by people who just repeat what others who haven't read the rules say.
Oh and....
