The comment about wanting to work for the job and not have it handed to him seems fairly generic and benign, doesn't necessarily imply anything.

I think he just meant that he knows he has to go in and compete for a job and not have it handed to him, which is what I would expect him to say.
I actually found it encouraging that the guys he mentioned as standing out are LSU targets.
