Les better hit on a few of these fliers he's taken the last couple of years. If he misses on all of them, the natives will get restless. If he hits on most, he'll be a genius.
This.
Especially the OL. He took a bunch of lower ranked guys in '08 that we have yet to really see how they pan out. We've heard some good reports about some of them, but they have yet to step on the field.
Guys like Lonergan and Hurst need to be homeruns from Les.
Also, I would just like to add that the "trust the coaches" mantra is not exactly the most accurate thing in the world--They miss on about 50% of the prospects that sign with LSU.
The fanbase has been right on many occasions as well when the coaching staff 'passed' on them for whatever reason. It goes both ways whether some like to recognize that or not. Coaches are not gods and they make plenty of mistakes.

also can throw in DeAngelo Peterson to the hidden gem category maybe. the first rivals update on him was 5/22/07

I'm not saying you full of it, but I didn't see anything about Mathieu until 2 nights ago. And when he committed, there were skeptics...although not this bad. Then today when Mathieu is shown to have a nice 4* rating by Rivals, all is well.
simply not true. Rivals guy saw him at the UT camp and raved about him. people were thinking he would get an offer at the previous camp before this one. the youtube videos of him at UT were posted here as well after the UT camp.

Do you really (not you in particular) think that the coaches just said "Eh, what the hell...I feel sorry for the kid having to live in Alabama...let's give him a free scholly"??

Williford will be very telling, as well.

Does anyone on this board live in Alabama near Selma?
I live about 1 hour south of Selma and follow HS football pretty closely. I've never heard of the guy. I'll see if any of the people around here have heard of him. HS football is a religion around these parts.

and most people think Claiborne is a hidden gem. was Holliday a Miles recruit? his coach brought him to a camp where he ran those fast 40's in sneakers and earned the offer.
I didn't want to start an argument about whether certain recruits were Miles' or Saban's so I left out Holliday's class.
But yes, I think you could probably say that HOlliday was a bit of a gem.
Can't make any judgement on Claiborne yet--he just got on campus.

edwards/peterson had katrina effects against them
they were pretty hot names once anyone knew who they were though, correct?

I think its going to be difficult to find too many fliers that panned out considering we only take around 5 or 6 players below 4* every year.

Peterson went to high school in Baton Rouge--It is hard to say a guy that lives in the same city as the college you coach in is a "hidden gem."
Also, he is another guy that is yet to prove anything--but he does look very promising.

Pretty much every program takes guys like Johns or Bates. I know Saban definitely does. But this right here tops it all because NOBODY heard of him. Logan was at least known and was mentioned several times before he even went to LSU's camp. I'm 100% sure about this, even if he wasn't in the Rivals database. Hell, someone was trying to pimp him out on here before the camp even came.

Edwards was a big time prospect from the very beginning.
Both Peterson and Lavar went to Desire Street Academy in Baton Rouge, LA.

well im just saying that he and claiborne might turn out to be bust but were relatively unknown at first then later were proven to at least be deserving of the offer.

true, just not this early though.
and the hidden gem thing shouldnt be a knock when 90% of the guys he gets are guys plenty of good schools want.
every program has a few guys to fill the class. Usually never expected to be more than SP guys at best.

I am hitting the yellow pages tomorrow making some calls to some Selmanites. A little research in the name of journalism shall work just fine.
