Defensive Backs recruiting for 2022 (long)
Posted on 3/6/21 at 11:31 am
Posted on 3/6/21 at 11:31 am
I look for coach ‘O’ and the LSU staff to go big at defensive back (DB) in 2022, taking as many six (6) DBs in the class (3-4 CBs and 2-3 safeties, if possible). Between corners and safeties, I feel safety will be tougher to fill based on the following:
Cornerbacks (CBs) – between in-state (LA) talent and plenty of OOS interest in LSU, it doesn’t appear the Tigers will have too much trouble signing a great cornerback class.
Safeties (S) – Significantly less in-state (LA) talent at the safety position than a year ago, and it doesn’t appear to be as much OOS interest as usual (perhaps b/c of the exceptional 2021 safety class)
Below are my notes accumulated on top DB targets for the recruiting class of 2022.
Denver Harris (CB, 5*, #6, Houston, TX) – On 2/21/2021, D. Harris tweeted his top-4 of LSU, Texas A&M, Bama, & UT. Texas A&M has been having some success in the Houston-area of late, and North Shore HS in particular, so they like their chances for Harris. Not surprisingly, Bama folks are cocky as usual, so they fully expect to end up signing him, as well. However, as long as Corey Raymond is doing his thing for LSU, I like our chances and whole-heartedly believe that we have a puncher’s shot with this kid.
Earl Little, Jr. (CB, 4*, #101, Fort Lauderdale, FL) – LSU is part of E. Little’s lead group, which also includes Bama, Miami & Florida. He is a Miami Hurricanes legacy but has legitimate interest in the Tigers. So much so, that many considered ‘O’ & Co. leaders of the pack early in Little’s recruitment (evidenced by 3 of 4 CBs favoring LSU).
The problem here is going to be Earl’s HS head coach, Patrick Surtain. Most will remember the recruitment of Surtain’s son, Patrick Surtain II, who signed with Bama in the 11th hour just a few years ago. While this relationship is not insurmountable, I believe most Tiger fans (myself included) have an attitude of needing to “see-it-to-believe-it” when it comes to landing this kid. I don’t see it happening.
Julian Humphrey (CB, 4*, #149, Houston, TX) – recently dropped a final-5 of LSU, Texas A&M, ASU, Penn St., & USC and also announced a commitment date of April 1, 2021 (April Fools Day). The 6’1”, 185 lb. prospect is rated a 4* (No. 149 nationally, No. 22 positional). While I believe LSU is more legitimately in the mix than Penn St. &/or USC, we already have verbal commitments from Laterrance Welch (No. 151 nationally, No. 23 positional), JaDarian Rhym (No. 159 nationally, No. 20 positional), and Marcus Scott II (No. 422 nationally, No. 63 positional) for the 2022 class. As such, my gut instinct leads me to believe that J. Humphrey will commit elsewhere.
Chris Graves (ATH, 3*, #530, Fort Myers, FL) – The 6’2”, 180-lb. athlete is rated a 3* (No. 530 nationally, No. 58 positional), and he’s being recruited as a corner back (CB) by LSU. Graves has expressed interest in LSU, and he was quoted in a recent interview as follows:
“The LSU offer means a lot because it is one of my dream schools. I knew LSU was interested, so I wasn’t too surprised when they offered, but it was a big offer for me.”
C. Graves continued by talking about being recruited by C. Raymond, and he shared that “he is a coach I like a lot”. Lastly, he referenced LSU being DBU and that LSU is “a school I am high on”.
Austin Ausberry (CB, 4*, #368, Baton Rouge, LA) – the son of executive deputy AD & former LSU linebacker, Verge Ausberry, Austin is an LSU legacy and the latest in-state (LA) prospect to receive an offer. The 6’1”, 185-lb. defensive back is a 4* prospect (No. 368 nationally, No. 34 positional) with an 87 rating by 247sports, and he became the 2nd-ranked CB out of Louisiana per the most recent rankings update (behind only Laterrance Welch). Considering that Ausberry played on the offensive side of the ball at WR his first two (2) years in HS, achieving the No. 2 corner back ranking is a testament to A. Ausberry’s raw athleticism, talent & ability.
Being the son of such an accomplished LSU linebacker and current member of the LSU administration, I feel assured that this kid will hold the P&G in high regard at all times and always give his best effort for himself, his team and LSU. I expect him to ultimately be in the Tigers 2022 class.
Jordan Allen (CB/S, 3*, #462, Lafayette, LA) – While the 3* prospect (No. 462 nationally, No. 26 positional) hasn’t yet received an LSU offer, J. Allen reports being in regular communication with Corey Raymond. When asked about the Tigers, Allen stated the following:
“I’m getting a lot of attention from LSU right now. They’re saying, ‘We’re coming to get you’ and ‘to be patient.’ It means a lot coming from them.”
Meanwhile, the offers continue to pile up for Jordan, as he has more than 30 in total. LSU insiders like the Tigers chances for landing him if they were to offer, but it doesn't look like an offer is coming anytime soon. In the meantime, Allen made it official earlier this week on Twitter that he would be announcing his verbal commitment on March 13th .
Kamari Wilson (S, 5*, #25, Bradenton, FL) – an IMG Academy kid, K. Wilson is a 5* prospect (No. 25 nationally, No. 2 positional) with offers from all the big boys. Top contenders for Wilson include Bama, Florida, Miami, LSU, & Texas. There’s a bit of smoke out there about Bama possibly having a slight lead for the, but regardless, it seems likely that this kid’s recruitment will go the distance (possibly until an All American game announcement is made). As such, I’m confident in this one still being up for grabs btwn. the top-5 programs previously mentioned.
Xavier Nwankpa (S, 4*, #72, Des Moines, IA) – the No. 1 safety per 247sports (No. 72 nationally) included LSU in his top-12 back on February 9th. At 6’2”, 190-lbs., Nwankpa is a physical safety that can close-out running lanes, as well as, lay the wood on receivers coming across the middle. He has stated on numerous occasions that LSU was his favorite school that he grew up cheering for – going as far as to drop the “dream school” line back in September 2020. X. Nwankpa is apparently familiar with the “DBU” moniker associated with the Tigers, as Tyrann Mathieu and Jamal Adams are a couple of his favorite players.
This kid is the real deal IMO, and he’s definitely atop my wishlist for filling one (1) of our safety spots in 2022. While he’ll be a tough pull from all the way up in Iowa, here’s to hoping Nwankpa turns out to be this year’s Derrick Davis, Jr.

Elijah Mc-Cantos (CB, 3*, #738, Miami, FL) – this kid was a key component for his HS team’s (Miami Edison) defense, allowing less than 14 points per game last fall. In addition, Mc-Cantos stood out at the South Florida Express’ 7-on-7 tryouts last month, displaying his talent in man coverage against talented WRs from the Miami area. Point being, I’m not sure Elijah’s current rank in the 247sports composite (No. 738 nationally, No. 78 postional) adequately reflects his abilities.
Regardless, ‘O’ and Raymond liked this kid enough to extend an offer back on January 15, 2021, and Mc-Cantos has expressed interest in LSU. In a recent interview, Elijah raved about Corey Raymond while discussing his recruitment. It’s looking like LSU has a good chance here, as E. Mc-Cantos lists the Tigers, ASU, Kansas and Syracuse as favorites from the 12 offers he has received.
Bryce Anderson (S, 4*, #61, Beaumont, TX) – I hated losing this kid’s verbal commitment last month, because the 4* prospect (No. 61 nationally, No. 5 positional) is a top-notch football player and track star. Unlike the other 4* safety that we recently lost (Bryan Allen, Jr., whom I’ve written-off entirely), I continue to believe we have a shot with B. Anderson (albeit, a long shot).
The only reason I am holding out hope for him is Daronte Jones, who has been on the phone with Anderson since taking over as defensive coordinator. I like the genuine approach Jones appears to be taking, as Bryce reported that Daronte came to him and requested he “keep them [LSU] in his recruitment, let them [LSU] keep recruiting him and don’t close the door on them [LSU].” Whatever else was said, it appears to be working because Anderson seems to be receptive to Daronte’s message and willing to build a relationship. In a recent interview, B. Anderson stated that he’s “looking forward to seeing them [LSU] play this year and seeing what they get done.” Furthermore, he wants to “sit down and watch some film with them [D. Jones & LSU]”, as well as, “attend a game, see what the atmosphere is like up there.”
And then on February 27th, approx. one (1) month following his de-commitment, Bryce dropped his top-5 finalists, which included the LSU Tigers.
D’Arco Perkins-McAllister (S, 3*, #656, Nashville, TN) – up until January 26th, Perkins-McAllister had 13 offers – all of which were from G5 and DII programs. On January 27th, Kentucky extended the first P5 offer and this opened the floodgates. D’Arco quickly received ten (10) more P5 offers, from the likes of LSU, Georgia, Oklahoma, Penn St., Tennessee, and others.
At 6’1”, 180 lbs., Perkins-McAllister is described as a long, rangy athlete with great ball skills in coverage, while also being plenty capable of closing running lanes and delivering blows to the ball carrier. D’Arco has a 247sports rating of 89 (highest possible 3* rating) and its only expected to move up from here, so he’s expected to be a mid-level 4* prospect (est. btwn. 275-325) by the ESP. Similar to his P5 offers and 247sports rating, demand for DPM’s services are expected to skyrocket over the coming months.
Based on my reading, it sounds like ‘O’ & Co. are set to begin the full court press for D. Perkins-McAllister. With D’Arco being a safety from Nashville, TN, Daronte Jones, Austin Thomas, and Orgeron will collectively lead the charge for his recruitment. It’s too early to tell exactly where things stand on D’Arco Perkins-McAllister, but early indicators point to LSU having a pretty good shot with DPM.
Kendrick Law (S, 4*, #113, Shreveport, LA) – a dual-sport star (football & track) at Captain Shreve, the 4* prospect (No. 113 nationally, No. 10 positional) excelled as a wide receiver and safety in high school. However, I’m certain LSU will have a greater need for Law in the defensive backfield as a safety.
I’ve heard LSU is believed to a hold a slight lead for Law, and I like our chances of signing him as part of the 2022 class.
PREDICTION
So far, coach ‘O’ and the LSU staff have extended a total of 45 offers to defensive backs for the 2022 recruiting class (29 corners + 16 safeties). Compare this to the position group with the next highest number of offers (35 to O-Lineman), and it’s clear that DBs are a priority in 2022.
With three corner backs already in the boat, I’m predicting we take six (6) defensive backs – in the form of four (4) CBs, one (1) safety, and one (1) Athlete that projects at safety. My best guess at the 2022 DB haul is as follows:
1. Laterrance Welch (CB)
2. JaDarian Rhym (CB)
3. Marcus Scott II (CB)
4. Austin Ausberry (CB)
5. Kendrick Law (S)
6. Bryce Anderson (S) OR D’Arco Perkins-McAllister (S)

Throw everything you have at this kid. To have the DC as his position coach should mean something. Jones needs to recruit this kid personally.
Best high school athlete to come out of Iowa since Tristan Wirfs.

I agree but I think Ohio state has the momentum in his recruitment right now.

I hear ya, IowaCityFan, and I would LOVE to steal this kid out of Big Ten country just like we did with Derrick Davis, Jr. from PA last year.
Dude is the real deal, and would be the next great LSU safety for sure!

What about the safety from Ponchatoula?!

Ausberry can’t have a commitable offer. He would be a PWO if he committed

I mean they should do that but why do you say that?

Khamauri Rodgers looked elite in the latest camp vid I watched.

Because he's still at like 5'11" 160 and that may be generous

We have a better shot at landing Jacoby Matthews than some of those guys you listed lol weird that you didn’t list him
Posted on 3/6/21 at 10:01 pm to NFLU7
He's more likely to be a tweener or LB than a CB or S. That's why.
Posted on 3/6/21 at 10:47 pm to NFLU7
Sorry about not having Jacoby Mathews on this list. I included him with Linebackers that I posted last week.
There’s no question, regardless of position, Jacoby Mathews is a MASSIVE priority and his recruitment will probably go down to the wire. He dropped his top-6 the other day, including LSU, Bama, Texas, Florida, Miss St. and _______ (forgot No. 6).
IMO, coach O has done well with the top in-state (LA) guys. I believe in ‘O’ here and think we have a very good shot of landing Mathews.

Bingo, deuce985, exactly right. Thank you for that!

Don’t agree with you, Azazel.
Austin Ausberry is a very good player that’s ranked/rated higher than Jordan Allen.
Obviously, he’s a legacy kid as well. Now, that doesn’t mean all that much to some, but I value the legacy kids a bit more than others (particularly the ones that reside in Louisiana) because I just think the purple and gold means a bit more to them than some others.
To me, Ausberry’s not only a quality player, but he’s someone that will give it his all every time out for the name on the front of his jersey just as much for the one on the back.
