I don't follow recruiting closely, but it does seem we recruit far better at safety and CB than we do at LB and DL. We may start to see more NFL size LBs on the roster rather than guys that look more like safeties. Beckwith and Garrett was a start in the right direction and it took a year to get Beckwith out of the DE spot.

I would've been sadder had Bama not driven down the field twice to win the game. I like our new recruiting tandem, and Steele may be more successful if he has the talent to work with

Didn't you hear? Just having Chavis in P&G was enough recruiting in itself
That and what people consider as fact, that LSU recruits itself. That is a got damn lie.
Alabama doesn't recruit itself, nor does LSU, Miami is a no, and we see this year that even one of the most historic schools in CFB (Michigan), doesn't recruit itself either.

Looking much much better.
Think if our D improved in the clutch... then there would be no words to describe the improvement.

I'll admit that having Chavis on staff was a recruiting liability.
Great coach, but didn't get mixed up in one of the most important aspects of College coaching...recruiting.
I was more upset he went to TAMU than anything.

Chavis's departure will be a blessing.....if the defense can stop the opponent on Saturday nights in the fall.
Recruiting championships do not equal National Championships.

I was pissed at the hire, but I am getting over it. I have decided to let this year play out before I judge him too much.
I like the new blood, as my biggest complaint was the stale coaching staff and complacency.

eh if there were a school in our division we had to lose him to, A&M would have been my pick. I just don't see this marriage working out, but hey A&M fans are giddy from stealing him.

But it turns a behind the back full court shot into a layup.

He has never been a great recruiter and his LBs have never been special. Minter was the only one that I would say played as an All American LB. It took him 1 year and 5 weeks, with 2 blowout losses to realize Welter should never be on the field in front of Beckwith. How many think any other coach would have done this???? Poor gameplan against Miss St, Auburn, Arkansas and Notre Dame. Poor LB play for a couple years with no good LB recruiting. Beckwith was a great get but he wasn't the lead and he moved the states second best LB in that class to FB who is not since off the team.
To me, Chavis was a product of Patrick Peterson, Honey Badger, Mingo, Brockers, Logan, Minter, Reid, Simon, Claiborne, and the list goes on. It would be hard pressed to screw up that talent. But I heard some say that it wasn't his fault because we were young and "Les" did bring in the talent. Well, when your DC is too lazy to recruit, also is not a great teacher.....how can you sustain excellence?
Chavis' scheme is nothing special. Get elite talent, coach them up to play disciplined ball. Nothing wrong it, but you better be prepared to bust your arse on the recruiting trail...he wasn't. "Hey brick....go get me players. I'll chat them up once your bring em to campus."
His "success" against the spread has also become exaggerated. He figured out Johnny Manziel, not the spread.

well sure, but its also no coincidence that all 4 teams in this year's CFB playoff are routinely at the top of the rankings.

I 100% agree with your post.
We weren't getting better with Chavis no matter how people try to spin it.
Motivation will bring out the best in the players and we have that now.

I look at it like this, we have three of the best defensive position coaches in college football right now. Steele doesn't have to do much beyond coaching up the LBs, and teaching the players how to execute.
Returning to a dominant front 7 will bring us back to elite level defense.

Exactly. People can say what they want, but Ole Miss raped us on defense every year minus 2011 no matter who they had. Clemson had a field day as well as WVU (they didn't do much in 2010 but put up 533 yards and 21 points on our 2011 defense). MSU has been a thorn in our arse the last three years as well.
He also sucked as at defending legit dual threats. Sure he had the recipe to stop Manziel, but not Marshall, Masoli, Wallace (this year was pretty good), Boyd, Zaire, Newton, or Prescott.

Chavis' success against the spread was more due to the kinds of athletes LSU has had on defense than his schemes.

its cute how they are already referring to him as "Chief"
O definitely helped me get over the inital DC hire. i can see raymond taking on greater responsibilities on the sidelines during games. seems like brick was our defacto DC with chavis in the box

the DL has been HORRIBLE since he arrived. The last 3 years the DL has under-performed to say that least.
It was Chavis's scheme, lighter-faster and Beckwith didn't fit. Neither would any of our past star D-Linemen. He only wanted the D line to take up blockers and he relied on the backers and safeties to make plays. Remember the SEC championship LSU-Tenn. They hit viciously fast and hard, but it was easy to out muscle them. Watch us run through the middle of A&M for the near future.
