They'll find someone in the portal. I'm actually of the opinion LSU scouting should grow and look at small college ranks to find elite hidden gems. If your scouting is good enough you can find the diamond in the roughs that can stand out in the SEC. They'll have far less demand on the market, will be cheaper in NIL, and you run into potential homeruns this way. Also, I'm of the belief these players will be far more appreciative of the opportunity to display their ability so I think you'll get higher character players here too.
Building a network around this seems smart for a program like LSU. There's plenty of great talent at the small college ranks that are good enough to play in the SEC and NFL. You just need good scouting to identify them. Is LSU's scouting good enough for that? I don't know. They've done it several times already in the portal and just recently Daniels at WR who has potential to be a stud.
Perhaps the bigger problem with this for LSU is it's much more difficult to project DTs at the next level just like HS than a skill position WR. I would like to see LSU focus on a bigger scouting department that makes it harder for gems to fall through the cracks in small college ranks with also the lesser known players in HS. In the NIL era it just seems smart to put more resources here so you cover more ground on issues like we're running into now within the portal. I'm not sure why this is so overlooked especially when all these mercenaries are demanding ridiculous uncapped funds.
You identify the stud, get him in the portal the big name. Then you fill your gaps for depth in with small college ranks with guys you identified as potential homeruns. At worst you have depth pieces so you're not really losing out.

Kelly is the one saying we need DTs

He said Gullory looked great all spring but we don't have a #2. That came directly from his mouth he said we need to find a #2.

Because there's longer term implications, like the message it sends to players that they can hold the program at ransom or that we're willing to throw more money at transfers/mercenaries than our own homegrown guys.
This is dumbass logic and you’re creating a problem in your head that isn’t actually there.
Let me know when Oklahoma’s players start holding the program “ransom”, I’ll eat crow when that happens.

Dom wasn’t on campus for spring

You clearly don’t understand how the world works.
Take a look at A&M last year. The toxicity of that locker room and total collapse after they blew all that $$ on the best recruiting class ever is Exhibit A.
So do your research before you open that hole in your face again, little boy.

Let me dumb it down for you even further….
If you found out your coworker was making significantly more than you for doing the same job, even though you’re as good or better than him at it, that wouldn’t demotivate you? Make you angry? Make you go look for another job that values you properly?
It’s not difficult. Just try to use what little matter there is between your ears.

Yeah but if you're immediately relying on a true freshman to go in and dominate you're in trouble already. Can he? Sure. You can't predict that though so it's even more a problem if you relying on it without actually knowing. No transfer portal guy is either but at least have game film to scout their projection to SEC at the college level.

You need 4 solid DTs to compete in the SEC. We have maybe 1.

1.5 mil to a slightly above DT when we have Harold Perkins on the team. Our entire offensive line. A 5 star DT that will be playing next year. Currently 3 number 1 players at their position committed. You want to price yourself out of the market? This is how you do it. College football is a business and you run it as such. You are in desperate need of a top notch IT guy so your company over pays for a decent IT guy. Exceptional operations guy hears about it and threatens to leave if he is not paid 30% more than decent IT guy.

Don’t bother. That concept is too complicated for his simple mind.

Again, I will trust this staff we have. Morons would be overpaying for unproven players simply to fill a spot on paper.

I agree with you about not freaking out but dt isn’t really a big stat position. Just being objective. He could have dominated those games and totally have disrupted the opposing teams offense and have very little to show for it on the stat sheet. I’m not saying he did. I’m saying strictly arguing that he didn’t impact those games by posting stats could be totally misleading g for a DT

Maybe they never had to work for money and don't respect the value of it.

No.
If you have a number 1 and you find a guy so good that your 1 just became a 2, you take him.
Not saying Damonic is better, but you don’t go saying, yeah, we want a so-so guy to sit behind our 1.
Alabama and Ole Miss shot their shot. Looks like we are now going after a ULM guy.
