If the players were smart they would all enter the portal and start a bidding war for ex team to bring me back or new team to join. Milroe should have made bama sweat even if he knew he was coming back

No, they're not allowed to do this - it's a clear and obvious violation, and the NCAA **will** pop you for it.

However, the reason the NCAA is so eager to enforce portal rules like this is because they're so easy to circumvent that choosing not to circumvent them shows complete and utter flagrant disregard for the rules - which, for obvious reasons, the NCAA does not like.

In reality, you just do this through the kid's HS coach or handler. College Coach texts HS coach "boy, we sure could use some offensive linemen (or whatever other position) in the portal! Whew, we need them so bad we'd probably be willing to pay $XXXX if one were to enter. Oh, by the way, I saw that [player] had a nice season this year - good for him. We sure would be happy if we could land someone like that! Anyway, see ya around!"

They can do this pretty easily without ever needing to enter the portal, though - they just have their HS coach or their handler or their agent do it. I promise you that any player who is hoping to create a bidding war is going to be able to get numbers from all the programs that might conceivably be the one to offer the most without needing to make a spectacle of it by jumping into the portal officially.

Unless they either (a) really care about being up-front with their current program, or (b) really want to actually do the whole recruiting-visit-tour thing, there's actually very little to be gained by officially submitting your portal paperwork if you're in a milroe-esque situation. Of course, it's much different for lower-level guys--which, granted, make up the vast majority of guys--but if you're an all-conference-type QB in a power conference, or a former 5* one year removed, or someone like that, it doesn't do you much good to make it official.
