Excellent post Dlab. I'm beginning to believe that recruiting rankings are based more on subscriptions within certain fan bases than on any kind of consistent knowledge or ability to evaluate talent.

Rankings are primarily based on offer list

You see what had happened was..........

Not so fast my friend. TexAgs board all bent out of shape over a couple of Martell tweets indicating he isn't happy with Summlin. Shaky commitment at the moment.

Scott has the chance to be a quality qb. I think we are back in for narcisse, and having the both of them compete will nearly ensure we get one great qb.
It will also be nice for both of them to have time to develop behind Harris, without any pressure.

Martell be drinking that manziel kool aid

You're comparing stats not talent/ability. Scott will be a excellent QB and leader.

I'll take Scott all day long and twice on Saturday.
Boyziel couldn't, Allen couldn't, Murray didn't want none and Martell wont.

It's the ranking system the are going to rank you how they want to. Look at Murray that just transferred from A&M he was 5"11 and a 5*.

He had 40TD and 2INT his soph year. Based on the first minute of film of Tate I just watched, he is faster and has a better arm than Lindsay. Also he didn't transfer in the middle of his HS career and plays for a MARQUEE school.
What in the heck are you talking about. Martell has a long wind up and a long stride in his throwing motion (like his pitching off a mound). There's nothing in Martell tape that supports he's faster. Maybe you wanna look again.
1st TWO MINUTES OF Martell Highlight
LINK
- 35 sec mark 47 TD throw behind the WR
- no runs shown in the 1st two minutes (so where does he show you his speed)
- Martell is a 18 yr old Junior
1st MINUTE OF SCOTTS HIGHLIGHT
https://www.hudl.com/athlete/1552093/highlights/315548386/v3
- 35 second mark - 67 yard TD run vs dtown
- 48 second mark - 60 yd throw with a flick of the wrist and on time
- 1965 yds rushing - you might want to really watch the tape.
- Scott is a 17 yr old Senior
Scott outweighs this kid by 17 lbs 188 to 205.
https://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/178795/tate-martell
Who transferred in the middle of their HS career? Martell's family moved him from Washington or Cali specifically to go to Bishop Gorman. Scott left dtown after his 9th grade year to a school that hadn't busted a football grape ever.
The number of people who comment here without actually watching film is amazing.

Good Lord.
Look. I hope Scott kills it here at LSU. He looks like he has some talent.
But if you watch video of Scott and then watch Video of Martell and you are having a hard time telling the difference, then I think it's safe to say you don't have a future as a talent evaluator.
I mean, cmon man.
Not to mention, I mean, you do realize these kids get a lot of up close time with coaches at camps where they are evaluated too. Cause, I mean, let's be reasonable here.
Even the best HS competition ain't good enough to make evaluating easy for coaches.
This is why looking only at HS stats can be so damned misleading. But shite, this Martell kid looks like he can throw a football through a wall. The ball comes out of his hands so fast you can barely detect when he chose to throw. He's fast as frick.
I mean, it's not exactly an insult to be rated lower than him. Get a grip.

Regardless.......all you have to do is look at the scores. The level of completion obviously wasn't there.

You guys also need to relax. Thinking another guy is really good isn't an insult to the LSU guy.
I mean, ya know, you can actually field the best team in the country and not have a single player on your team who is in the top 5 at his position.

Does this mean Martell should be a 3* or Scott should be a 5* or is the whole rating system FUBAR?

ShortyRob - just realized that this not your 1st negative post concerning Scott. Your prior post shows that you are unimpressed. I get it. But this thread is about how in the heck is Martell guy who is 5'11", a 5 star. The original poster was wise, pointing out that Martell is not a 5 star. Do you really understand the criteria that you must satisfy to be a 5 star? Prototypical size, perfect mechanics, NFL QB... If you read the definition of a 5 star (on any site), it leaves you wondering how any person could objectively confuse martell as one.
Martell throws with ALL OF HIS MIGHT with a huge over stride. I look at not how much velocity he might throw with, but if he has to cock his leg to make the throw, the ball is not jumping out of anywhere.
I have followed martells recruitment since 8th grade. He's a kid that Univ of Wash offered too early, and he didn't grow. Parents transferred him to Bishop Gorman along with a childhood teammate (WR). Follow this closely:
1. Bishop Gorman has legit Major college prospects on the team (Martell is not one)
2. In an effort to secure his teammates commitment, Martell is offered by the same school (as a package)
3. Rivals, 247sports, ESPN, scout.com are driven by the size of the prospect offers, and the size of the individual schools canvass
4. The larger the school, the more paying subscribers means more stars
Lastly, they know that the average fan (and the A&M coaching staff) are naive enough to buy into the star system. Martell has played the system well. But he is not two stars better than LSJ.
