This is what I have tried to tell him about Jalen Cook. I think Cook is a decent player, but he doesn’t put this team we have over the moon. Even with the injuries, I just find it hard to believe he contributes more than Murray or even Gaines. Gaines impacts the game in so many ways other than just shooting it. But the way his shot has looked much better also. Cool is doing well at Tulane, good for him. But it’s Tulane! They aren’t playing the sec every night.

It’s ok to admit that saying he was a star was wrong but so was saying he couldn’t play. He is a contributor on a top 25 level team that plays a pretty decent schedule

Nobody was saying he literally would never play here, just that he wasn't some huge key contributor like lester kept arguing for months. The main reason he left here was because he didn't like how his minutes were shaping up once we rounded out the team through the portal and freshmen. That should be the first sign what we had been saying was right all along on him not being the player some people like LE made him out to be. Secondly, now he's on a good mid-major but in a still far from SEC level conference, and he averages just 7 points a game and in conference play is really only doing anything against the bad teams they play.

Knight is good enough to get some minutes here, but he was never going to be some key player or one of the better players on this roster. He was merely a high volume player on a very bad mid-major previously. Yes by now he would have been a part of the rotation, but so would a lot of guys since we have had 3 starter level players injured recently plus guys like O'Neal dealing with injuries all the time too. I dont think that's necessarily some "gotcha" when it comes to how LE was presenting Seneca Knight previously on here.

Agreed fully. No one is knocking Knight or Cook as players. It’s just no one is buying the crap that Lester is pushing that they would put this team on another level. Even with the injuries, they wouldn’t

Cook would have played a ton in moments like right now. He would be the ball handler no question over Gaines.

Cook was more instant offense and ball handler while Gaines is more defensive energy/length. They served 2 different purposes really. Even with a healthy lineup I think Cook plays on this team, he just wanted to be a featured player and when we got Pinson/Miller than kind of faded fast.

The interesting part of Gaines vs. Cook is the fact while they are 2 wildly different players, their impact on advanced metrics like Box PLus Minus is very similar.

Gaines has a negative 0.4 offensive box plus minus but has a 6.3 defensive box plus minus for a net of 5.9. Cook has a 6.2 offensive box plus minus and a negative 0.4 defensive box plus minus for a net of 5.8. These are metrics are "meaned" out to an average team to make things as equal as possible.

So they are the same impact on the floor just in 2 wildly different ways. Gaines' defense is elite but offense leaves a lot to be desired while Cook's offense is elite but defense leaves a lot to be desired.

Cook would simply have more impact overall for us right now though since we desperately are searching for offense in the absence of Pinson, Miller, Days, Eason (most recently), etc...

I haven’t pushed anything about Knight since I talked about him in the preseason

LSU still has a hole at his position. I’m not sure he’d matter much but he certainly wouldn’t hurt for depth

Cook would be a great fit on this team though

How do they have a hole at knight's position?

Knight wouldn't even be getting mins with the injuries.

He is averaging 7 points at byu.
