After the hurricane, I had to bring a bunch of dirt because of all the lost trees. I spread ryegrass seed to secure the soil and prevent my dogs from turning my backyard into a mud pit.

I haven’t cut the ryegrass at all (she’s tall). I want to spread zoysia now.

So a few questions:
What do I need to do to the yard to get it ready for the zoysia seed?
When do I spread it (SWLA)?
Is the ryegrass going to come back next winter?

Annual rye will not come back next year. Spray it with msm to kill it. You can spray the rye now, wait two weeks and put your seed down. Read the instructions on your specific seed but generally you just take it in and keep it watered.

So I have to kill it? That sucks. Should I scalp it first?

You don’t have to but the zoysia would germinate better.

You kill it because you don't want your new Zoysia seed to compete with the ryegrass roots for nutrients or space while the Zoysia is just germinating. It's not yet hot enough to naturally kill the rye.

When did you plant the rye? I may consider spreading some rye for the coming winter because my dogs did precisely what you described. A big ol mud pit in the backyard atm.

Annual rye is the least finnicky seed I've ever dealt with. I've laid it down when it's 70 degrees outside and 40 degrees outside, germinates fine. First cool snap of Fall is usually when I make my first pass then wait a few weeks and seed in the holes.

shite grows in the cracks in my driveway with no soil. It's awesome and super cheap and looks fantastic all winter.

By your first pass, you mean aerating?

Normally in October. Let it germinate and start to grow and then look for areas that need a little more seed. If you seed over existing grass you'll want to scalp it first.

October was when the dirt work was done.

No I mean seeding. It grows so fast that you’ll be able to see areas you missed with seed after 2-3 weeks.

Can someone explain this to me?

From the MSM label:
quote:

HOW TO USE
Use spray volumes of 20 to 80 gal/acre and pressures of 25
to 35 psi at the following rates of MSM Turf Herbicide from
the weeds listed below:
0.125 TO 0.25 OZ PRODUCT/ACRE
Ryegrass (greens)

I've got a half acre to spray.
