Wrapping Front Porch Columns

My front porch has 5 outdated columns I am looking to wrap with wood to give a more boxy and up to date look. I plan to get these columns painted to match the color of the front door. Once wrapped, the columns will be roughly 12x12.
Has anybody ever done this? Recommendations on a wood type?

What are the current columns made from? Wood, plastic, or stucco over foam?

Since you are just going to paint them, use treated lumber and be sure to let it dry good before priming and painting.
If you can get it, get treated already dried and it will be more stable to use right away. If in the N.O. area you may be able to get dried treated wood from Gueydan Lumber on Central Ave. and Airline Hwy.
Kiln dried treated will not shrink or warp like the damp wood will as it dries out.
If I were doing it, I would keep the bottom end grain off the ground level so it will not soak up moisture by wicking of the end grain. You will then need to box in around the base to make it look finished.
