With all of the recent AC unit questions, here is one about an opinion when out of town

On a weekend trip, Do you turn it to 78-80ish if you are gone, so it’s basically off for 2-3 days and let it take many hours to cool the house down

Or do you leave it on 74-75 so it stays kind of cool and then when you get back home it doesn’t take as long to cool the house

I set mine around 80 degrees.

My vacant rentals, maybe 82-84.

Set high when we leave and then set to regular day temp the night before return (wifi thermostat). Don't want the unit fighting to drop the temperature 6+ degrees during the hottest part of the day.

82 downstairs and 84 upstairs. It doesn’t take as long to cool back down as you think. The amount of time off will far outweigh the time it takes to catch back up on a 2-3 day trip.

I normally try to gain it back slowly when I’m headed back via my app so the ac isn’t doing it all at once.

My Nests switch to Eco when no movement is detected. Not sure how high it gets.

we leave our temps the same and do not change when we leave for a couple reasons:

1) We have traditional, finished-in-place wood floors and changing temperatures is hard on them

2) We have fish that like a very narrow temperature band.

It gets pretty feckin hot. Just in May, my house would get to 80-82 degrees in eco mode with the Nest. That’s just too hot to come home to (and I never remembered to crank it dow before I came home) So I just keep it at 72.

Not really a fan of the Nest for a home with just one AC.

This doesn't bother me.

I either set my upstairs and downstairs Nest to Away (I think Eco is different?). Upstairs never gets above 84 and downstairs never above 82 thanks to shade trees. I either schedule before hand for the Nest to return to desired temp, or I will just open the App and take off Away and it will return to reg sched temp.

Love my 2 Nests.

Recovering quickly from those types of setbacks just screams oversized system.

As others already said, it's possible to have the best of both worlds if you have a smart therm and app. I set mine to 80 while on vacation. When I start the drive back in the morning I lower them to 76 (if it's early enough, it should have no problem cooling it from 80-76 before the heat of the day kicks in). Then when I'm about an hour away I'll lower again to 73-74. Plenty comfy by the time I'm walking in and I didn't make it try to cool from 80 to 73 all at once.

Not everybody can remember to do all that, so you could always set a vacation schedule and tell it to return to normal the morning of your return. Nest therms can detect no movement and go to Eco mode on their own too, so you don't even have to remember to mess with settings. You can adjust the range of Eco mode as well. It's all super easy... can't imagine why anybody would opt not to use these features and instead pay to cool a house to 70 for a week while nobody's home and it's 95 outside.
