My folks have a Generac and that thing is awesome.
Super pricey if you need it relocated though with permitting, new slab etc.
But it bailed their butts out during Harvey.

I see more Generac in homes I inspect. If it was my money, I'd go Kohler. They build generators to the size of Cogeneration MW providing power to thousands of homes. Plus I've been to Kohler to see the facility first hand then visit the showroom for everything bathroom, kitchen and home ...Four stories can keep you busy for a while.
Their customer service is excellent.

I just got quoted ~19,800 here in Dallas area for an install of a Kohler 20KW whole home generator including automatic transfer switch, gas hookups, permits, etc.
Seems really high for a generator that costs around 6k by itself.
Does this sound right to you all?

As said a lot of it depends on where your utilities are currently. If both your electricity and gas lines are right next to each other in the same location you want your generator, then it can be pretty cheap. If they are in different places and neither where you want your generator then running those lines maybe pricey.

holy crap thats very high
take the 1 off the front and that would seem fairly reasonable
you can get a gas line run from one side of the house to another for $300-400

i’m just gonna buy it myself and install it on the pad then hire a plumber and electrician to pull permits and do the connections

Was that a water-cooled Kohler 20KW? Even if it’s was, that stills sounds high. Internet prices of the 20KW water cooled Kohler’s (generator only) seem to be in $10-11K range, double that of air cooled Kohler of same KW.
