Whirlpool washer won't agitate, stops cycle

It fills, but when it should start agitating it just does nothing. No noise or anything until I click the dial over to the rinse part of the cycle, then it will spin and drain and finish the cycle.

No idea if this is your problem (doubtful), but mine acted in very similar fashion that you described. It had a lid problem where my wife (not sexual) would lean with her elbows on the lid in anticipation to wait for the spin cycle to finish so she could quickly dump everything into the dryer.

It made the lid bow just a little bit and would prevent the cycle. I would have to pop it back from underneath and it would work like normal again. We’ve gone through the same shite three times now. I think she finally understands.

This is likely not your same issue but I figured I’d offer that as a potential unexpected solution… good luck

I think I have a different problem as my lid switch seems to work. During the fill I can make it stop and start filling by lifting and closing the lid. It just finishes filling and then waits forever not agitating and never finishing the cycle.

Does it have 5 green lights?

If so.
Turn the knob to the left 180°.
Then one click right, one click right. One click right. One click left then one click right. All the lights should be flashing. It's in test mode.

Turn one click right and press start. Then post the lights you see. This is binary code telling you what is wrong with the machine.

If you turn it two clicks then press start it runs a self test cycle.
. There is a book hidden inside the front of the machine that explains it all but you need to know your error code to repair.
Most of the time with that model it's a f7e5 error and a bad mode shifter.
Easy part to change.

Now if you don't have the lights on the machine, then it's a bad timer, but those older machines rarely break the 5 lights machines break all the time.

The machine doesn't have lights. I was leaning toward bad timer, but pricing on those things is all over the place. Do you have a trusted supplier you can share? The timer part number is w10177827.

Something else about this machine, for many years it has had an issue where it like gets out of sync and after the spin cycle it would shoot more water in the tub and soak the clothes. The "fix" that I found on YouTube was to just tap on the knobs. I could never remember which one, so I would just tap all the settings knobs (but not the timer knob) a few times and it would be good for a few months to a year before it started doing it again. I've been doing this for probably a decade.

Ebay usually has the best prices. Techs often sell parts they don't need for cheap on there. I know I do.

With bad dogs it still agitates it just does so poorly.
From description it sounds like machine does nothing in agitate.
To test timer there is a test position marked by a small line. You line the timer up with the line and pull it out and it should agitate.

This tests the switch and the timer. Assuming mechanical timer and not electrical control style "timer,".

It doesn't make any sound though. Not even the ticks from the timer. I can manually turn the dial and then it picks up the next part of the cycle and continues on.

That's an expensive timer. My cost is over $200 new. Going for around $100 used.
Amazon has it though. .

Crazy. The whole machine barely cost more than that.

Have you seen that out of sync problem I mentioned?

The thing is. It's a classic direct drive. It's a better machine than you can go buy. Second only to a Speed queen.
A cheap new machine is $500 you can fix it for $200. Knowing those machines I would fix it. Changing the timer will fix the issues you're having. .

Our Whirlpool wouldn’t agitate at all. Replaced the dogs for about $6 and fixed it.
