It won’t be long before the distinct sound of the whippoorwill will be heard in the fall evenings of north Louisiana. I love sitting on my back porch at dusk when they fire up their song!
Anyone else enjoy listening to them?

Have lots of them at my property outside of Birmingham. Love them until it's time to go to sleep

I am a little confused by this. First, if it's North La., then you're probably hearing a Chuck Will's Widow unless it's a bird engaging in migration. Second, while La. is in their breeding range, most maps have them far to our South during non-breeding months.

I was stumbling around in the dark one morning looking for a deer stand and accidentally kicked one sitting on the ground. It flew up right in front of me screeching and scared the shite out of me. Took a few hours before my heart rate came back to normal.

I'm a little confused too. But I never hear the Chuck Will's Widows call in the fall, while in the spring they go relentlessly all night since my house is in the middle of their prime breeding territory. I've never been anywhere where Whip-poor-wills are common and I've only heard them maybe 6 times in the last decade, and seen one (in Ohio). eBird maps don't show Whip-poor-wills to be common anywhere in the fall, but maybe a bit more common that the Chuck's. If the OP has them (which I don't really doubt) he is a lucky man.

You may be right. I’m not a bird expert by any means. Since we built our house and moved in 2019, we’ve had a something that sounds like a whippoorwill in the spring and in the fall. I want to say April/May and Sept/october.
I hunted in Claiborne parish for years and we had one up there too. Unlike me, they go all night long. Typically starting at dusk.
Typically changing spots nightly.
Also, I’ve seen lightening bugs here and haven’t seen them in 20+ years.

Blessed more than I deserve that’s for sure.
Now I’m really excited to see if I hear them again.
Thanks for the info!

I’m in central MS, but don’t think I’ve ever heard them in the fall. All the time in the spring but not in the fall

I had a buddy at our hunting camp that felt the same way.

I'm one to pay pretty close attention to this type of thing, and I still have only ever heard Chuck Will's Widows. I hold out hope that one day I will hear or see a Whippoorwill.

After hearing the video on one of the sites I think what I hear are the Chuck Will's Widow. Hopefully I will know in a couple weeks and I'll report back.
When i heard them as a kid I was told it was a whippoorwill thus, my calling them that.
Thanks again for the replies

We used to hear them all the time at my grandfather's place near Folsom when I was a kid, but haven't heard one in 40 years.
