plenty of thick webbed patches on my tree with worms inside.

they can do some damage in a hurry.

How do I kill them without destroying my tree.

Long cane pole with gasoline rag tied on end. Light gasoline. Burn but don't stand under it.

I'm trying this tomorrow. I'll let you know. The little bastards have taken out 3 trees in 3 days.

Generic Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) will knock them out.

You have to break open the web before most insecticides will work. Those webs are great at repelling water. You can do that with smaller trees, but it is harder with larger trees. Fortunately, they aren't as much of a threat to large mature trees.

It is almost always Fall webworms for me, and they mostly go after my pecan tree.

Sprayed my persimmon tree yesterday with malathion. They are dead today.

Will these things kill a tree or is it more about looks?

Not usually. Larger mature trees are fine with them, they're just ugly. Smaller/younger trees may be defoliated if the worms are bad enough, but I've seen them leaf back out by Fall from the early webworm damage. They're easier to deal with on smaller trees, though. Just drag them out and open the webs up. I've done it before and as soon as I got away from the tree birds flocked to the webs to get the worms. That's all it takes most of the time, just breaking up the webs.
