My wife loves tulips. She buys bulbs in water, and also blooming flowers in small pots.

They inevitably die in short order when they get into our house.

Any tips for keeping these alive? Or are they just a scam unless planted in the ground and grown normally?

I'm not sure but my mom use to have Tulips in a bed and I think they die back after they bloom until next spring.

Just a quick search:

Pruning
When growing tulips as perennials, remove the flower stalks immediately after they flower to prevent the plants from producing seed pods, which drains the bulb's energy and shortens its life. Leave the foliage in place until it turns yellow in mid-to-late summer. This helps replenish the bulb's energy.

you can grow tulips here. plant the bulbs in the fall before it gets cold and they’ll sprout and bloom in the spring

Also they like dry soil or the bulb will rot.
