Easy on an older unit but I have a newer one with this type of set up. Will a generic thermocouple do? Do I need a special thermocouple or need to replace the whole unit like this?

It would be an easier clean up if you don't shoot it and instead just remove it the correct way.

The last time I tried that I watched a few youtube videos and it looked easy. I unscrewed the screws and it still wouldnt budge. At that poing I called somebody. Money well spent.

When I did mine, I replaced the thermopile assembly. It was super simple to do. Cost me about $30 and an about hour of my time.

Just replaced one of these. Called a thermopile like the other guy said. You don't need to replace all of that. It all comes apart. There's a clip or something holding that rod in. It just comes out after you remove the clip. Then just reverse it, feed the wires in and hook it all back up. I do highly recommended having the correct tubing wrenches though.
