I live in The Woodlands just north of Houston.

Looking to line my backyard fence line with some evergreen trees for some privacy year around. I have a good amount of fence line (~150 feet) so mature trees would be very costly. Looking for something that is evergreen, can handle the Houston weather, and fast growing since im not buying mature trees. Our previous house in same neighborhood I planted a bunch of bottle brush bushes. Checked the list on everything and grew like crazy (12+ feet tall), but do not have wide foot print for the privacy and when we had some freezes hit here in Houston 2 years ago it killed all 4 of them. They did look good before that though.

We also had those bottle brushes planted between some other trees we planted that checked the boxes off, but I cannot remember the type of tree? Want to say it was some Japanese type evergreen but cannot find it online. They made it through the freezes for the most part. I kept christmas lights around the trunks year around and would leave on during the freezes at night.

Any help be great!

Take a look at Hollies – Eagleston, East Palatka, Savannah all offered in tree form or full to the ground and Pineapple Guavas.

Japanese blueberry might be the tree you're trying to remember.

Leyland cypress are fast growing and form a screen, but they're also notorious for mass die-back. They get large enough to present problems for removal.

If 10' is high enough, maybe a hedge of sweet viburnum?

Nellie R. Stevens Holly or Needlepoint Holly are good for privacy screening. They grow fast and are very cold hardy. They don't bloom like Bottlebrush though.

That's the one, Japanese Blueberry.

10' would be perfect height.

Appreciate the input!

My experience with Japanese Blueberry in your area is they prefer mostly sun, well drained, and able to get air circulation.
