This thread has great info! After this past week, I am considering the interlock route and avoid the headache with all of the cords running to the various things i want to power.

This was MUCH cheaper than buying and installing a whole house generator

Have you considered your fuel supply though? Your idea is sound, but the benefit of a whole house is that it’s hooked up to the nat gas line or propane tank. Creating 8000 watts is likely to burn a bunch of gas, like 20-40 gallons a day or more potentially. So you need to determine how you will supply this.

For the fueling, they sell adaptors that allow you to run just about any portable generator on natural gas, propane, and gasoline. This gives you plenty of options. However, you will need to know that the wattage capability diminishes with alternative fuel, with gasoline giving you the highest performance. Running on propane or natural gas would prevent issues people have with gummed up carbs or bad gasoline in the tank.

I’m a fan of the portable generator with a transfer switch. It isn’t nearly as convenient as whole home, but much more affordable, and be moved to a new house or loaned to others.
