Can you top one and not kill it?
Moved into a house with a 40' tall orange tree in the back yard.
I can only get the oranges up to about 20'. The rest just rot in the top of the tree falling out making a mess and attracting fly's.

40 ft orange tree - that’s impressive but you should be able to top it, but I would not do it all at once - remove no more 25% of the foliage in a year - for the overall heath of the tree. So I would top 10 ft this year, and 10 feet next year. Expect a significant amount of new growth below the area you top that you might need to thin as well.

^^what he said. I'll add: prune it thoughtfully, don't just hack off the top like it's a hedge plant. Figure out where the main upgrowing branches originate--take them out from as low to the main trunk as possible. You don't want to inadvertently create a gumdrop shape that will be unstable in high wind.
