Tips on laying sod in front yard

I have a certain section in my front yard (underneath a tree) that needs grass. It's pretty much dirt in this area with St. Aug all around. When's the appropriate time to lay sod? What other tips besides watering regularly do i need to know?

how hard is the dirt under the tree? Is it hard pan?
if so, you will need to bust it up.
But, be aware you will likely need to trim up the tree some to let some sunlight through to get any grass to grow.

It's not directly under the tree. I have mulch approx 5'-6' in diameter around the tree so it does get some sunlight (2-3) hours a day

if that's all the sun you get, you will probably need to plant fescue.

How much sun does st. Aug need?

If there is St. Aug all around it except there, then I'd say it needs more sun than what that area is getting. St. Aug should be taking over if it is bare.
If you sod it, depending on light, you might keep it alive for a while, but it will be a constant struggle.
How big of an area are we talking?

make sure to feed your lawn with lime.
trees, especially large ones steal nearly all the nutrients they can from the lawn, which is why growing grass around a tree can be hectic.
I started to lime the hell out of the front yard and while still spots close to tree that refuse to grow, i got the grass to a nice green look. Even when most lawns around us were looking dry and dead
