Tying to figure out the issue with a garage door opener. It starting making a lot of noise and would not move in either direction.

As soon as I removed the cover, the larger horizontal gear , the housing around it and the spindle the gear rides on all fell out. I manages to get the gear assembly back together. The housing has 3 screws that hold it in place. The plastic part that the screws go into looked like it was sheared off on all 3 screws.

I got it back into place using some longer screws. The chain moves in one direction (close) but, not in the open direction. Doesn't make the noise any more but, also won't open the door. I can see the plastic part that looks like it has 3-4 notches on it and points towards the circuit board turning both opening and closing. but the chain does not move in the open direction even when disconnected from the door.

I'd like to take another shot at fixing it before replacing it. Any ideas what to look for in the assembly to resolve this issue?

yeah, i don't have that info with me. I can get it when I get home.

I just know it's a Genie chain drive opener. It's old enough that it probably should be replaced. I'd just like to take a shot at repairing it before replacing it.

you're going to love a quiet belt-driven system.

i say trash it. you may get it working for what..6 months? then something else will fail and you'll curse the fact you didn't bite the bullet and get something more up to date. those belt systems are only a couple hundred dollars ISTR

Similar thing happened to my old opener. It was getting stuck closed. Took the housing off, and the gear was some sort of plastic. Teeth had worn down and some had sheared off. I looked into replacement parts, but everything I needed was going to be about $60-80, and I would have to fix it. I bought a Chamberlain chain drive opener with the MyQ WiFi features for $160 and installed that instead. I like the notifications when it opens/closes and has been left open.

yeah this is at a relative's house. It's actually the old one from my house that i replaced with a belt drive opened with wifi.

i will likely end up replacing it but, i'm a "fix it first" guy.

Check to see if either of the door springs are broken. It may not be your problem, but it's easy to check.

You may want to take a look at maybe greasing/lubing the wheels and track on the door. There is a reason it broke in the first place. If you disconnect the door from the opener, can you open it by hand?

yes, opens easily by hand. and the chain doesn't move in the open direction when it's disconnected from the door. So, it doesn't seem like a door issue.
