I need a pool equipment service person for Prairieville area. I need the sand in my filter changed . I've always done it myself but the time has come to hire it out as my back won't tolerate the job any longer. Thanks!

why do you believe you need to change the sand? my understanding was that you should basically never have to change out the sand.

If the pool is always cloudy, no matter how well the water is balanced, it’s probably time for a sand change. Typically 3-5 years. Glass media lasts longer though, and filters better.

Sand gets less corse with use and can’t trap particles as effectively. But it does last a long time.

You think the sand doesn’t move in the filter? Your question has already been answered in this thread. But you continue to laugh like you know lol

If the sand is moving it isn’t filtering.the only time sand in a filter moves is when you backwash. Maybe OP can send me a bag of sand when he changes it and I’ll put it under a microscope and compare to “new” sand.

They have done this already. It’s more rounded than new sand.

From Google:
quote:

New pool sand has sharp edges that trap debris efficiently, typically lasting 3–5 years, though some can last 10+ years. Old sand becomes rounded and coated in oils, causing increased pump pressure, poor filtration, and frequent algae

Chat GPT to the rescue;
Pool filter sand usually needs to be changed about every 5–7 years for a typical residential pool.

You may need to replace it sooner if you notice:

* Cloudy water that won’t clear up
* Poor filtration even after backwashing
* Sand blowing into the pool
* Higher filter pressure
* Channeling (water cuts paths through hardened sand)

Over time, the sand grains become smoother and less effective at trapping debris.

A few general guidelines:

* Backwash when filter pressure rises about 8–10 psi over normal
* Deep clean the sand once or twice per season if possible
* Most filters use #20 silica sand

If you have a saltwater pool, heavy debris load, or year-round use, you may end up replacing it closer to the 3–5 year range.
