I don't need a monster, just something to suck up saw dust and other debris from working in there. Seems there are a ton of options out there for size/power/etc.

Anything I need to avoid?

16 gallon RIDGID a solid choice? LINK

Last one I bought was from Walmart. paid about $50 and works great. SS drum on wheels.

I love my 12 gal Rigid, but its big. Still able to pull it around with ease by the hose, not heavy if empty, but it takes up a decent size footprint.

If you can wait a few weeks (Nov 8th), the 16 gal will be on sale for $59:

If you won't be using it for liquids, just look for one with a good filter system, and the features you like. Wheels or castors on the bottom, hose attachments, etc.

I've got a fairly large Ridgid one that can double as a blower if you flip the hose to the other side. Has a crevice tool, rolls, and a drain for when I use it for liquid. I've been through about 3 or 4 of them. They all seem to last about 4-5 years and then something happens. I get a new one for about $80 and keep going.

Even better is to hope for the home depot clearance where you could potentially pick one up for under $20

If you have a Home depot near you get their brand. If you have a lowes near you then get their brand (shop vac?) The filters can get pricey if you have to get a ridgid compatible one at lowe's and vice versa.

Lowe’s = Kobalt
Home Depot = Ridgid

Which reminds me of when a distant relative who likes to hear himself talk was rambling on about tools and told me to go to the Home Depot and get a Kobalt something or other. How he had not picked up on the store brands, especially how one is blue and one orange, I don’t know.

I made the mistake of going cheap. I only needed a vac for ONE reason. To suck out dishwashers and washing machines. I got the $90 harbor freight. Vac works. But if I pick it up the container falls. So I have to carry it.

So long story short.
I'm about to put it on the curb. You pay for what you get with vacuums.

I checked Lowe's website. For Shop Vac's they have Shop Vac brand and Craftsman. I don't have a Lowe's nearby so I can't verify what they carry. On the website the only shop vac that was kobalt branded was a cordless one.
