Sugar kettle water is golden brown

Less than I year ago I drained our sugar kettle, sanded the thing to near perfection, painted it with a specific sealant (don’t recall the name), let dry, reinstalled pump etc
Eventually the water turned brown, now rust colored.
I want to drain it, but obliviously I need to reconsider my technique- I’m open to suggestions

Have leaves fallen in it and made tea?

I'd guess that there was some rust remaining in the metal before you sealed. Or that you used a clear sealant?
Try sanding again and then using Ospho to convert any remaining rust before you seal. I use a two part epoxy called Macropoxy 646 PW and it works well/won't degrade by UV like the clear sealers do. It is designed for potable water tanks so it is safe for marine life/plants you may have.

you could fiberglass the inside.

it could be some sort of algae growing in it. Do you ever treat the water with anything?

I fiberglassed the inside of a cement mixer I bought years ago to use as a compost bin. Still going strong. Performs like a boss.

I drop a chlorine tablet in it

Going to bump this thread, bc I searched sugar kettles and this was the most recent thread on TD.
I’m looking into adding one in a small area next to my front door. I have plumbing and elec ran already. Plan to make the area covered in pebbles. Level and put the kettle in the middle and have a fountain/small pond out of it. I will have some potted plants and stuff around it with lighting.
Anyone have any tips with these? Recommendations or anything on best place to find them? Should I go fiberglass?
