Anything I can do to keep them away from flower beds and such?
An adoped Airdale Terrier has worked for me. Dare I say the best dog I've owned and I've owned many. Likes approaching the ladies on trails and in parks too. Nice segue that I appreciate.

I haven't seen a rodent or cat in my back yard in two years.

frick outdoor cats.

If they are on your property trap them. My dog pretty much keeps the strays away in our yard, he killed a young one once and has taken out a couple of young opossums too.

My back yard is a barren wasteland as far as rodents and cats because of my dog. He fought the biggest raccoon I've ever seen to the death and it was horrific. I had a shovel and I couldn't break it up so I just had to live with the results. The 'coon had to have weighed 35lbs at least. You can take away my man-card but it was horrific and brutal. I had to get him stitched up on his snout and the raccoon tried to take out his eyes as well. He was pretty damn proud of himself all stiched up.

I had them crappin all in my raised gardens. I got some big containers of cayenne pepper and black pepper and sprinkled them all over the soil a couple times a week. They quit using my gardens as a litter box the rest of that season.

this ^^^^^^^ is the only thing that keeps them away

if the cats are eating the flowers and such you can mix up liquid crab boil with hot sauce in water and liberally spray all the plants with it to shut down their munching habits.

I was able to witness a possum/ coon fight in my back yard a while back. The possum stood no chance but It was an epic arse kicking.
