We are rebuilding in Lake Charles and having a helluva time finding columns we like to install on front and back porches.

We need seven 8 ft tall columns, but looking for something either concrete or solid wood. Somewhere around 8-12" wide, but also round if possible.

I see the fiber reinforced poly (FRP) columns readily available, and the PVC wraps, but I dont want a hollow sounding column.

Yall know of any SWLA sources??

I dont think Ive ever listened to a column.

Other than that, Im no help. Maybe try a local mill or somewhere that has lumber on site and can make them.

The FRP are pretty solid. That’s what I have. The wraps are cheap IMO.

You could also go Stucco. I was debating the concrete vs stucco vs FRP.

I can’t find the information for the guy from the Lafayette area that quoted me concrete columns. He was pretty similar to the FRP price installed.

I’d suggest calling a local building material supplier (not big box store) as they can often order custom stuff like that for you. Or even call up a custom home builder, they may give you a contact for concrete columns.

If you want round, go with the FRP. A good trick is to paint it by hand instead of spraying. With the brush marks, you’ll never know it’s not wood, once painted. Not sure how many people will be knocking on them to see if they’re solid.
