i am probably going to frick this up royally, but i want to create 2 cement curbs (there's a step up) on the edge of my garden that runs along the walkway instead of the rock wall i have now that gets weed infested and strows shite all over the sidewalk constantly that hurt my feet.

do i just buy some 2x4s and make a frame then hammer some rebar down and mix up some crete and pour it in? i feel like this is going to be an absolute disaster.

eta pic of what i'm talking about. those rocks piled up on the left. the 'step up' i'm talking about is where the water hose disappears. i have to create 2 curbs to edge the garden.

Several companies will pour continuous concrete curbing in my area. Maybe you should hire a professional?

They don’t form them up and pour them, it goes into a machine that drops the mix into a path and forms it as it goes

You can buy a trowel and do it yourself

If you want my guy to give you a bid let me know, between Reserve and Stephens he's in the area almost exclusively. About two weeks out on schedule

yes, please. i have no idea how much something like this would cost but that garden bed really needs a better border. the wood edging has rotted on the side going up the hill so i need something there as well.

using cement? Im not sure you understand what cement is. Maybe you should hire a professional...

if your talking concrete then you could do it yourself but if it is a ton, mixing bags will get tiring.

i really don't. my typical ignorance reaches peak here..i just know you can buy these bags of 'crete' at home depot and mix them up and they turn into something solid.

Those curbs are not concrete, because they don’t have large aggregate in them.

Cement is an ingredient in concrete, to make those curbs its 4 parts masonry sand and 1 part Portland cement, so not totally wrong.

yea they do. Sand is an aggregate (small). While concrete is large and small aggregate and cement, if you want to get into semantics we can call this mortar.

Is that 4:1 sand to portland ratio producing something different or more stable than using a bag of quikcrete? Quikcrete has a video of them building borders, but they are using forms. Not sure what the difference is with the end result.

I have seen some DIY videos of drawing the profile you want in plywood then cutting it out to use as a form. It looks like an acquired skill that I have not acquired though. Hire that sucker out and be done with it.

quikcrete is just the brand. they make all kinds of mixes which you can buy which i has different ratios of things. true concrete, quick set concrete, mortar, countertop, etc.

or you can buy pure portland and mix sand yourself

See where I said LARGE

And it pretty much is mortar

Regardless of all that he’ll want to get cement and not ready mix concrete

Yes I get that. Let me clarify. The product they used in the video was crack resistant (stuff in the red bag). They mixed it and shoveled it into the forms. It had some slump.

The pic posted previously was portland/sand and was mixed pretty dry (maybe close to zero slump), piled up and shaped with a trowel.

Just wondering what the difference was in terms of finished product or durability. If this is one.

I’ve never used the stuff, but this guy was hand packing the “mixture” into the trowel/forms

The only way I’ve seen it done in person was behind one of those things that looks like what they use to chalk the lines of a baseball field.
