Anyone ever installed their own metal roof? Seems fairly straightforward, I suspect cutting roof angles would be hardest part. Renovating a whole house and trying to cut costs where I can. Any advice?

How steep is the roof?
How high off of the ground?

I have put on many metal roofs on camps and sheds, not very hard to do if you are handy.

but

My house is way too steep and too high for me to do safely.

It has a very low pitch. No issue with that whatsoever.

I’ve done a couple. Not really that hard. Need atleast 3 men and good screw guns. You want the torque to be correct. Too loose and they leak. Too tight and the gasket can get pinched and leak. This is corrugated sheets obviously.

The angles are not too bad. Make a pattern and send it down to the cutter. Then he only needs the length of the last sheet. Inevitably there will be sheets that are part straight and part angled. Those can be tricky.

ETA oh yes. Pitch matters. Once you start sliding, you’re almost certainly going down to the ground.

Low pitch roofs are more likely to leak and need better install and flashing than steeper roofs. What type of design is the roof? Is it a simple gable or a complex design?

It has multiple off shoots and additions as it started out as a cabin 100 years ago and over time had multiple additions. That's my biggest issue is all the angles and hodge podginess of it.

I would hire that out

Just a plain gable roof and you are ok. You’ll get yourself in a bind quick if you have to start cutting angles, putting in flashing... etc.

And take your sweet arse time getting the first sheet of each face right. Because if it’s just a little bit out of square you are screwed when you get to the other side.

A good metal crew will knock it out quick and it’ll be right.

Yeah, don't cut cost in areas that will cost you more later to repair. You want to cut cost.... get paint grade cabinets vs stain grade; use a good vinyl flooring vs wood flooring; hang all your sheetrock and run all your trim; paint the inside yourself but let someone else tape & float... and so forth.

AS a person who designed, estimated, material breakdown and then supervised over 1.5 million square feet of metal roof at Walt Disney World .....

1. Trash the American Standard BS on installing metal roofs. That is written around the old Copper Roof guys who sautered the seams and flashing ....It does no good on steel or aluminum.

2. I would find a local machine shop with a ten foot hand break. They can bend to your pitch and make all trim metal and flashings you need. At Disney we had five on site.

3. When you cut angles in panels ....what do you intend to do with cut edges? That cut panel may be at the ridge area ....exactly how do you intend to make that water tight? If you intend to use silicone forget it. The first time the temperature climbs ..that silicone breaks it's bod between metals and now is a piece of useless plastic floating around under the surface of the panel....with no water seepage capability whatsoever.

Two pieces of metal have electronic capability ....they will draw water uphill.

I can write a book if you wish ..... the trouble with all of this? The backyard ...I install metal roofs people are just and useless ......Good Luck ...

And Roofer Guys ...I meant to insult you all the way ...I fired crew after crew at Disney because of the useless habits of backyard ...roofers.

Me and two buddies installed an asphalt roof on a 9/12 pitch on a fourplex of mine in 2007. A roof is one of those things I'd definitely pay for in the future. Screw that nonsense. What made it worse is we had to strip two layers of shingles and lay down new MDF as well. Who has two thumbs and is a miserly dumbass? This guy.

From my own experience I'd pay someone to install your roof. You can install tile or something else that's straighforward, IMO.
