Recently bought an older house (1970s) and renovated the master among other things. Finally moved in a few months ago and have been waking up with headaches and itchy eyes each morning. Goes away as the day goes on. Ran a do-it-yourself mold test kit on the air in the room and mold was found. No visible mold or smells but do have a low drainage spot from the backyard that runs to the house right near the master. Thinking moisture could have gotten in-between the brick and drywall during big storms over the years.

Any thoughts or recommendations on folks in BR to come out and run an inspection? Really don't want to tear out the drywall if I don't have to.

I agree check for moisture first.

You will always have mold spores in air. Not sure how the results are reported in your sample, but typically you would compare an indoor sample to an outdoor sample and see if indoor levels are higher than outdoor levels which may indicate a problem.

Also, how old is the Hvac/ duct work? You could have gaps in the insulation of the ducts allowing condensation to form

Duct work is original but as part of the renovation we blew in more insulation in the attic and rewrapped the ducts bc it was original too. No mold seen in the attic though.

Will look into checking moisture. We didn't do the test outside, just inside. Good to know that its common to get mold inside.

Used this...

Mold Armor Test Kit

Just got back results from lab work... Identified Chaetomium spp, Aspergillis spp, and Penicillum spp. Googling now unless anyone may know better?

Mold spores are in the air everywhere in the south, they are only going to grow where conditions are present, mainly moisture. You have to compare interior and exterior readings to know if the spores are elevated.

Think of it like this, take a towel, get it wet, hang it on a hook and it dries out, no fungal growth, so the same thing, ball up the towel and throw it in a closet and bingo, mold. The moisture was there for the conditions to grow, stop the conditions and the mold will stop growing, but depending on the material it is growing on, sometimes the material can be cleaned and sometimes it must be removed to remove the mold.

Ever since you moved in or just recently? Could be due to the changing weather.
