Anyone have good experience with this?

I have a 8x65 decked corner porch. Trying to determine what is best to seal it. It will have full direct afternoon sun but no morning sun.

I really want as close to a natural finish as possible. Should I do a semi transparent stain or Thompson Water Seal. I think the stain will last longer but will obviously change the color. Thompson’s always seems to dry really dark.

I have a fairly large pier at my camp. Been using Thompson’s for years. I switched to Cabot’s three years ago and will not use Thompson’s again. All of the manufacturers have clear sealants.

Not sure about all the Thompson hate in here but it’s been fine for me. Be sure about the color you are getting. The thing I hate about the canisters is the color of the canister for all solid seals is the same, all semi transparent are the same etc etc. it’s easy to frick up and buy the wrong one by accident if you’re not paying attention.

We ended up using a semi transparent timber brown I believe. Here are my tips:

1) get a long nap roller and use that for the surface of the deck, the longest you can find. I think we used a 3/4 inch nap roller and that worked well. If you try anything shorter it can be hard to cover more than one board at a time and it won’t go in the cracks.

2) lather it on really thick. You can see spots where I didn’t seal as thick and it doesn’t look as good.

3) do not get the natural cedar color. Looks orange and shitty as frick

4) prepare for a tedious undertaking but take your time
