Sand/stain/seal wood columns

We've got 9 total columns that are all white and would like to be stained to provide a better look on the house. Best practice to go about removing the old paint, staining, and sealing them for longevity? I've considered doing it myself but I currently only have a battery powered Craftsman random orbital sander that probably won't have enough power to knock off all of the paint from the columns. Columns are all wood 6"x6"x8'(guessing on the height, but no taller than that.) Not too concerned about sun damaging the paint as they're fairly covered most of the day and only get the morning sun til about 10am.
While I do think having a belt sander in my arsenal would be cool, I'm not sure I would find much use for it after I do this type of job, especially if I already have the random orbit sander.

Paint would be a whole lot easier to do and maintain.
People around our neighborhood stained their columns and they all look like faded crap from sun.
I used a high quality exterior Sherwin Williams paint and mine look fabulous.

Paint them a wood color.

If you stain look into possibly using gel stain (General Finishes). Goes on line paint. Also check out GF Exterior 450 topcoat.

This. Probably get someone to do it though unless you happen to be really good at faux wood painting.
Staining just opens up a world of maintenance. Plus there might be caulking/filler that is going to screw up any staining plans once you start stripping (

Would trying to use a paint stripping chemical like Citristrip help in this case? I don't mind prepping because I do worry that going directly on top of paint might not produce the best results even if gel stain works on painted surfaces.

You could strip one and see how it goes.
I sure wouldn't try staining over paint.
