House clearly had a door under the stairs in our laundry room. Previous owner must have removed it. I'd like to add one but wife doesn't. Everyone's thought?

I think that's a good idea.

Remove the rug while you're at it.

Doubt I'll cover it up with shelves. Crawlspace is needed in case of tornadoes.

Yea I'd say it's all getting replaced sans washer and dryer.

If I'm using it for tornadoes then I'm putting a door on it. Debris guard.

That looks like a portal to Hades.
I'd put a door up to clean it up and you can store some odds and ends, like a shop vac, in there

Pocket door, so you can leave it open if desired without having the door in the way.
I’d put shallow shelves on the walls, leaving the center free for your tornado shelter.

I’m not a tornado shelter expert but what’s the difference between sheltering in the laundry under the stairs vs. the closet under the stairs?

I'm sure the laundry room would be safe. Smaller room is safer. Laundry also opens up into the garage, not sure how much that changes it. Big tornados are pretty rare, but rather keep the option available. Plus door hides the crap you decide to store under there.

Can never have too much storage space, utilize it.

Make it some type of folding area. Maybe do the deep shelves at bottom or a cabinet with a countertop on it. Then put some shiplap on the slanted area with hooks for hanging.

any extra storage is precious, especially in the center of the home. Make use of it.

having a door there would just be in the way all the time

thats why previous owner removed it (PS - i bet you find it in the attic somewhere)

also who spends more time in laundry room, you or her? do it her way and avoid removing the door later on when you tired hearing her bitch about it being in the way all the time.

That’s where my water heater is (electric). Also have a shoe rack for boots and outside shoes. Even have room for a 6’ step ladder. Brooms and mops in there too.
