WORST ADVICE ever.
Why? They test it for free which is cheaper and more accurate than the high end pool testing kit you suggest.
Plus they give you a print out that gives you quantities of the chemicals you need to balance your pool.

No you won't. Its not that hard to tell them "no thanks" when they try to sell you their chemicals and walk across the street to a grocery/hardware store and buy them there. This was already suggested to the OP.
I have tested it myself and brought samples to a pool store for years. I find bringing a sample to pool store is much easier. I have crystal clear water and haven't bought anything from the pool store other than salt and shock. I prefer shock over bleach (which I find shortens the life of my liner).

Pool store testing can be hit or miss. Maybe you have a great one nearby, but the Pinch a Penny near me is horrible when it comes to testing. Their tests cannot be trusted.
For instance, with my kit, I had a CYA level of 60ish. They tested it and it was 60 also (to keep my pool shell warranty, I have to have my water tested by a professional). The next month, they said my CYA was 0, and they said my pH and alkalinity were levels that weren’t possible together (look up pH ceiling and alkalinity).
I explained that my CYA was 60 the month before, and the only way to get to 0 would be to completely drain my pool. I also explained the pH ceiling and asked if they could retest. The next test had my pH and alkalinity levels exactly where I tested it at. But my CYA was still a 0. I kind of laughed and the manager came by. After explaining to him, he tested the CYA and said it was at 100.
I’ve seen them test other people’s water and try to sell them so many chemicals they didn’t need, such as clarifier. They tried to sell me CYA after the first 2 CYA tests and that would have skyrocketed my CYA.
Bottom line, I trust my testing way more than a pool store. My water has always been crystal clear. I’ve only added muriatic acid to bring down pH and baking soda for when I need to raise alkalinity. I check CYA at the beginning of the season and add enough to get to 60. I add salt periodically to stay within limits since I have a SWG pool.

Fortunately, I haven't had this problem with Leslie's since they upgraded to computerized testing.
Of course every week they try to sell me calcium and phosphate remover. Just tell no thanks and move along.

We have tried everything and can't beat it this year
This was me last year. Then I read a thread on here and a guy suggested an algaecide with copper sulfate in it. I went got some, added it, and the pool has been crystal clear all summer.
I always bought the cheap stuff and thought they were all the same. Apparently they're not.

I had an algae problem a couple of weeks ago. I went to have my water tested and bought a bunch of shite. A day later clear as can be.

Thanks again folks, I appreciate your input.

I’ll add that I follow the trouble free pool method. It’s easy, it works, and my pool has had zero issues. It sounds like you need to do the SLAM procedure.
