Anyone have Rec’s for someone around Baton Rouge who can swap out a pool heater (Natural Gas)?

Anyone go the online route for heaters?

Currently looking for quotes for someone to do the complete job and also someone who would install one I purchase online.

Also, any particular brands people have had luck with or think I should stay away from? Apparently my current heater (LAARS Telledyne 2) was installed in the mid 90's.

Switch over to electric, the new ones are much more efficient

If going gas I like the Jandy JXI Versaflo models. Ducky's Pools in Metairie sells them. I'm sure they could hook you up in BR.

I did a little research on this and it sounds like they don’t heat as fast as NG which would not be ideal for the Spa.

Electric is kind of thrown around as a term. There are 2 types of electric pool heaters: immersion and heat pumps. Immersion heaters are rarely used on residential applications. Heat pumps are great for pool applications depending on how they are sized and what time of the year you want to heat. Heat pumps can heat spas in many applications but gas will always be faster.

Are you trying to heat the pool as well?

Yes, gas is faster but more expensive. If you're only heating a spa, go with gas

We mostly use it for the spa but we do hear the entire pool a couple weekends a year.

My current NG heater has lasted over 20years. I don’t expect the next one I purchase to have the same lifespan but I certainly expect it to last more than 2 years. Everything I have read about premature rusting is that it is caused by an unbalanced pool/excess chemicals. I test the water myself every couple days and my pool stays pretty balanced using the program spelled out on Troublefree pools.

A curponickel heat exchanger will last longer. Make sure you keep the pool balanced as you mentioned. If pH goes off for 6 months the heat exchanger will be shot. I see many gas heaters last 6 to 24 months due to improper water chemistry.

Pool Heater info

Go with a Commercial one. Not much more expensive. They can handle the chemical swings better than a residential model.
I have a Raypak Commercial 400,000 BTU
Gas.
Love it. Built like a tank. Commercial Model.

Commercial is required for public pools which have big chemical swings.

Just my thoughts. The link has a lot of good info.
Helped me make a purchase.

As I mentioned before for this application I would go with the Jandy JXI series. It is a great unit and we'll supported in Louisiana. That is a other consideration when choosing a brand. Service is outsourced and varies by region. Ducky's in Metairie has really competitive prices on Jandy products so I would at least get a quote from them.
