Somehow they got in my attic. Poop everywhere.
Thoughts about how to shut them out and clean it up?

Find where they are getting in and nail some wire over the hole.
You already know the answer to cleaning the crap up….

Post this on the outdoor board, you’ll get a retriever dog owner interested in trapping the birds for dog training. Now you don’t have to deal with it.

This is the correct answer.
I had a 2 story double behind mine several years ago that had a louvered entry on a back attic wall that was missing several louvers and it wasn't long before pigeons found a roost. At one time it got so bad that there were at least 50 of them flying in and out all day long. The lean-to roof under the opening was covered in pigeon shite and I'd imagine the attic space was just as bad with nests, broken eggshells, etc.
I talked to the people living there and they passed that info to the landlord but he did nothing about it for over a year. Then one day I saw the louvered cover completely off and a couple guys heading in. Pigeons started leaving and not long after that they covered the opening with a sheet of plywood to keep them out.
The guys showed up again a couple days later and looked like they were cleaning up nuclear waste with white body suits, goggles, filtered face masks and a bunch of garbage bags.
Bottom line------stop the madness early on and avoid the mess.

Had a bird in my attic two weeks back. Plugged the hole . Caught bird with a net and tossed it outside. Plan B was BB gun
