I am planting a pecan orchard. I plan on planting 100 trees, i have 30 in ground now. I planted Elliot and Jackson trees. Any advice on fertilizing, pruning and upkeep on trees. Thanks

I have 20 mature trees in my back yard of three acres. Not really a money maker. A couple thousand every year. I've been getting more fire wood than pecans lately.

yep I have 12 mature pecans along my driveway

they make a nice dramatic entrance to my place but primarily they are a steady source of smoking wood

Following. I have the same plan - about 100 trees. We put 13 in the ground last fall and have 25ish ordered for this year. So far we have Elliot, excel, and sumner, but we are getting our arse handed to us by either caterpillars or deer. Everytime they leaf out and look ok they will get ALL of their leaves eaten in a day. Started spraying a couple weeks ago and am going to get some wire fencing to wrap them in tomorrow. Hopefully it’s not too late they are looking rough.

Sounds like where my relatives live. One of their houses had maybe 8-10 along the hill in their front yard. About a half mile down, my uncle had about 15 spread out. They were all old and mature 30+ years ago when I was a young boy. Some years were great for a decent harvest. Others, you stack the wood that falls and use it for the firepit or smoker.

Pic off any leaves/sprout below the graft. If you don't you'll end up with a native/whatever your rootstock is.

Good luck and prepare to work you nuts off, pun intended.

Don't retire thinking "I'm gone get rich selling pecans."
