Need some advice from this board. I recently had some crawl space doors made out of expanded metal. Right now they are bare metal. I house is old brick that’s been painted with a latex exterior flat paint. If I wanted to spray paint/prime the doors with something prior to painting them to match the brick, what should that be? I was thinking enamel paint/primer for metal, but wasn’t sure if I could go over it with the latex. Thanks in advance!

You can use enamel primer and go over it with latex.

Just make sure it is totally dry and if there's any runs from spraying them, lightly sand them out and scuff the rest before putting on the final coats for better adhesion.

I've always used enamel primer at half tint to the finish color when priming prior to painting houses that have been sanded down to bare wood in places. I just think enamel adheres better than latex primers and I've never had any issues going over enamel with latex.

However, some DIY types will have latex roll and peel if it is applied over enamel painted doors and trim simply because they don't do the necessary prep work. If using latex over enamel on doors and trim, sand them to scuff the surface for the paint to stick well.

ETA: Make sure the metal is clean as in no oily residue on the surface or the paint will be compromised.

Spray it with phosphoric acid and hit it with a some Sherwin Williams DTM paint. Avoid latex like the plague, it will peel in a few years.
