With hurricane season just a couple of months away I seem to notice quite a few advertisements for home generators. Has anyone here gone the route of putting a large propane tank on your property as an alternative fuel? It is my understanding that at times getting natural gas can be tricky when there is high demand. The way I see it if I am going to go off the grid why not do it right?

I’m interested in this too. I’ve got a 13,000 watt portable generator that I run off 20 and 30lb propane tanks when needed. I’ve got plenty of land around the house but no access to natural gas. It seems a large tank of propane to tap during power outages would be better than refilling small propane tanks or storing gasoline.

You need a lot of propane to run for a long time. Like multiple multiple hundred gallon tanks.

Yes you need to run the numbers on your supply and demand. How is tank resupppy after a storm?

But generally speaking yes it would make more sense to have a tank

My 7kW continuous runs my 2.5T AC wonderfully with a soft starter on it. It's also dual fuel (propane/gas) inverter type that is quieter and conserves fuel during low loads. I plan on installing a natural gas kit to it to make it a tri fuel at some point.

It's not like I can run my entire house simultaneously. AC and entertainment is all I need out of electric. Range and hot water is gas. Dryer can be ran as a single load to the generator (if the power is really out that long that we need to do laundry?)

If you have to get a tank then you should use propane. It’s a lot more efficient. Some generator manufacturers even tell you that you’ll have less KW with Natural gas.
