Nicholson bench, hand plane, rag in a can

Hand planes are great. I use them on every single project. I have a Veritas #7 jointer, a Veritas 5 1/2, a Lie Nielsen #5 and a Lie Nielsen #4. Those are my benchbplanes along with a wooden scrub plane. I also have a Veritas low angle jack.

And 3 block planes, all Lie Nielsen. A 60 1/2, a 102 in bronze and a rabbe block with nicker. They're awesome and I the 60 1/2 and 102 for breaking edges with a light chamfer, l8ght end grain work and removing saw marks from small pieces.

I also have a Veritas shooting plane. It's awesome and pretty m7ch every board gets tried and squared at my shooting board.


My favorite though is my Veritas router plane. There's nothing better at cleaning tenon cheeks and for fine tuning depths of things like dadoes or whatever.

I als9 have a Veritas medium shoulder plane that rarely gets used. Better for bigger tenons luke timber framing. Supposed to be used for cleaning up tenon shoulders, but a little big and awkward for most tenons, so 8 use a rabbet block plane after doing the bulk of cleanup with chisels.

I’ve tried all sorts and the oil in a can is just the easiest. May not last as long, but easiest to reapply - pull plane across and keep going. And it makes it easy to oil the plane for storage.
