Im buying a new home and it has a new wooden fence. What can I do to prevent it from getting that old gray look in a couple of years? Should I stain it?

You can either stain it or use some type clear latex sealer that you can spray on with a garden pump sprayer. I've seen folks do this with Thompson's Water Seal.

Some will come on here and advise using old motor oil mixed with mineral spirits or diesel fuel and use that to seal it, but that is not a way to start off neighbor relations in a new location.

Not bad advice if living rural and want to save some money.

If its new it should have a fresh coat of stain/sealant. You will need to re-apply stain every 2 to 3 years to keep it looking new. Is the fence cedar, pine or white wood?

I'm assuming you meant to say garden sprayer. I don't see why not. Just make sure to mix it well before putting it in the sprayer---especially if using a stain/sealer combo.

They make latex stains, stain/sealer combinations and clear sealers if that is your preference.

Just make sure to clean the sprayer out with lots of soap and water and run it through the nozzle to clean it for future use.

Thanks. Final inspection next week. I’ll ask about the type of wood. I just assumed it wasn’t treated because it’s broke bright wood yellow.

Look at the bottoms of the fence boards. If it was treated wood used, there's a good chance you'll find a tag stapled to the end of the fence board that will say "Treated" or "Yellow Wood"===which is a form of treated wood.

I can't imagine anyone putting up a fence with anything other than treated or woods like cedar and redwood which resist rot and bugs without being treated.
