I have two units that run my house. One of the Units only cools down my bonus room area upstairs. The AC hasn't been blowing cold and I am going to get someone to come look at it. My questions is, if it needs to be replaced could I just get one of those mini split units to run and what are your experiences with these? We dont go up there much and its not a huge room to where we could just turn it one whenever we want to go up there, which is basically what we do now with the AC.

Woah man, slow down. Why do you think it needs replaced? Age? It likely just has a freon leak like a $300 fix.

Also, Mini splits are great to ADD or to install in new construction. If you already have the duct work set up, you can likely get a regular unit for a similar price as a mini split if you are just talking like a 1.5 ton.

Believe me, I'm going to do all the checks before I replace anything. I just like to always have a contingency plan.

If it isn't blowing cold, turn it off asap.

If the fan isn't spinning or the lines are frozen outside you could do a lot more damage by continuing to run it.

It could he as simple as a bad capacitor which is a $20 part. There are several troubleshooting steps you can check yourself to narrow it down

I don’t know any of those steps. Care to share?

call somebody out. get it checked. no dont install a mini split. They are more expensive than a regular unit in a lot of cases. Especially if you already have duct work ran.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. Turn your unit back on and go outside. Ensure that your outside fan is spinning. If it isn't, get a stick and try to spin the blade clockwise mannually. If it starts spinning on its own, could be a bad capacitor, or just fan motor starting to wear out. If it won't spin at all, fan motor is likely seized up. If it will spin manually, but won't continue to run on its own, probably a bad fan motor

If it is already spinning on its own when you go out, wait a few minutes and see if the AC lines start to freeze up outside.

If the lines are freezing, check at your furnace and make sure that the filter is new. Also, make sure the blower on the furnace is working. If neither of those are the problem, you will have to get an ac person out to leak check for freon leaking. You could have a condenser going bad, or a leak, or many other problems, but almost all of them will require a professional.
