Concrete shop floor about 1400 sq ft. 14 years of oil changes of lawn mowers, ATVs, hunting truck. Trailer bearing work, lower unit gear oil, lots of PB blaster, WD40, etc... over the years. You get the idea... concrete is not new but in very good shape. Just has stains.

Was thinking of hitting heavier oil spots with some Dawn then pressure washing it a few times. Home Depot tool rentals have a concrete sander. Was thinking of doing this last then hitting it once more with a pressure washer.

Will paint or epoxy stay down prepping this way? Is one better than the other given the concrete isn’t new as described above? Is there a better way to prep?

I had this done in my garage about 15 years ago - love it. Has some chips here and there, but nothing noticeable. Great for oil changes - spills clean right up. The texture is much better than the concrete when wet too. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

If you pressure wash, make sure you leave plenty of time to dry completely. Rather than the sander, the company I used just etched the concrete with muriatic acid.

I’ve only done epoxy on new concrete but every product data suggested pressure washing and acid etching. I ended up going to Sherwin Wiliams and got the industrial stuff. It was more expensive but it’s going to last a lifetime. They run forklifts on that shite.

I used the stuff from Home Depot on a garage floor in a house I bought that was about 25 years old. If I remember correctly, I just pressure washed the floor before putting it down. No issues, worked great.

I appreciate the responses from everyone.

Definitely pressure washing and most likely going to etch it with some muriatic acid.

after its clean and prepped go over it with muratic acid then wash down with soapy water and then straight clean water

use epoxy paint, regular paint cant hold up to vehicle or heavy object traffic
